WHL: WEEKLY MAGAZINE VOL.3, NUMBER 4 We have been experiencing impression and delivery problems (lol) with the weekly mag as of lately but things should be getting better now. Hopefully this is the last issue that comes out late. The season is now well under way and we have a better idea now of who will be serious contenders this season. The Lunatics are an original member of the WHL which was the major factor in making the decision. All interested teams made strong bids but the Lunatics was the only one that had a GM who had been in the WHL since day one. The Quakers also made a bid but it arrived at the league offices after the four finalists had been announced. 2- OVERALL TEAM STANDINGS The teams are ranked primarily by the percentage, and then, in case of a tie, by the number of wins. And finally, in case of another tie, by the difference between goals for and goals against. With an 8-3 thrashing at home to divisional rivals, the Vancouver Voodoo, the Vikings are astoundingly below .500. The offence is among the worst in the league which is a mystery to everyone in the organization. "We have one of the best groups of offensive talent in the league but can't buy any goals," were Dean McAmmond's words after the Vancouver game, "and tonight we stood still and let Vancouver own the ice. We were embarassed plain and simple." Sophmore Radek Dvorak has been scratched the last two games for the first time in his career. Alexei Zhamnov, who over the first two WHL seasons was the 3rd highest scorer in the league, has yet to get untracked and had just 20 points through the first 21 games. If this debacle in Edmonton doesn't end soon look for wholesale changes throughout the organization with GM Lee McEwen the first to have to answer to the masses. He's the one who made several moves over the summer that were supposed to bring the Vikings closer to the league's elite, instead they are further than ever. Rumors abound in the city that McEwen's company, McEwen Enterprises Incorporated, is in the midst of preparing to sell the team. If that does indeed happen, it'll be up to new ownership to determine whether or not McEwen would stay on as GM. No official word has been made as of yet but apparently McEwen would like to stay at the helm and the major condition of the sale is that the team does remain in Edmonton. Jim Matheson for the WHL Weekly the VOODOO ---------- Player Profile on Corey Hirsch Corey Hirsch joined the Voodoo in a trade with the Dominators this past summer and expected to come in and get spot duty behind Voodoo super goalie Curtis Joseph. Well that hasn't been the case. Cujo has been mildly hurt since near the beginning of the season and the injury is still nagging him. "It just doesn't seem to want to get any better, we have tried all sorts of things, I think I spend more time in the hyper-baric chamber than I do on the ice lately, " remarked Joseph. So the duties have fallen on the rookie Hirsch, "Well this is a lot more than I expected, I just hope we can keep winning as a team." Hirsch has played pretty well considering the style this team plays, and comparison's to a young Grant Fuhr are being heard. Hirsch leads all goalies in wins so far with 12. "The guys are really the ones that can take the credit for all the wins, I mean we are averaging over 6 goals a game I think, I just try and make the saves when we need them." Doug Weight, the WHL surprise leading scorer, added this about the guy affectionately known as red, " He has been great, he makes the saves when we need them, usually early on when it is close and occasionally late in the game if it is close." The only question now is what happens when Cujo gets healthy? "Both goalies have shown they are more than capable of playing in this league and when Curtis is healthy again we will look at getting him back in there, but we will still go with the hot goalie," said Tom Renney. 20- COMMISH NOTES - By Michael Hebert -Rumour is that the Monarchs are in financial trouble. And this week the problems seemed to get on the ice as well, as the Monarchs slipped from 3rd to 6th place overall... -The League's offices need more room! Their current agreement with Geocities provide the league with only a limited amount of storage space for the WHL's archives and documents, and it is reported that some documents have been moved to another location and more will have to be moved. This shouldn't cause any inconvenience to anyone in the league, except for the person responsible of maintaning the documents and archives (hmm who would that be...) That's all for for this week.
