Joe Sakic has finally found his stride, and now begins to lead this club off AND on the ice. For example, looking below you will notice he led Toronto in points over the last five games. These past five games saw Joe set new club records for Power-Play Goals and Game Winning Goals in a season, and he is now 5 Goals and 11 Points away from setting new club records in those catagories. Joe will then hold 5 of the 8 offensive club records (Points, Goals, PP Goals, SH Goals, Game Winning Goals) and at his current pace could also set a new Shot record. Currently the only offensive records not held by Sakic are (Best +/-, Assists, Shots). Our best players over the past 5 games were; GP Player Name Goals Assists Pts SOG +/- PIM ------------------------------------------------------------ 5 Joe Sakic 6 2 8 21 3 6 5 Alexander Mogilny 4 3 7 16 3 9 5 Alexei Zhamnov 3 4 7 21 7 21 5 Stephane Richer 2 4 6 12 2 2 5 Roman Hamrlik 0 4 4 3 4 14 5 Boris Mironov 0 3 3 7 3 13 GP Player Name Record Sh Ag. GAA Save % ------------------------------------------------------------- 3 Corey Schwab 2-1-0 87 8 2.67 .908 2 John Vanbiesbrouck 2-0-0 56 4 2.00 .929 Alexei Zhamnov has started to turn in some great moments, his skills are obvious and his opporunities are starting to pay off. He has found a couple of linemates that work well and we hope to see more production from him now. Mogilny, although nursing a slight groin pull, is still playing great and Stephane Richer is continuing his usual stellar play. Newest addition to Toronto, Shawn Chambers, has played in two games and has one assist to show for it. We had been trying to move Richard Smehlik for some time, his play was not what we had traded for and it seemed he needed to move on. In 30 games for us he had no points, and was a -1 with very few shots. His play was consistant, but it was consistantly poor. He has been hampered by a sore knee, and it was slowing him down, but his play was nowhere near what we bargained for. Shawn is a warhorse, and I believe he will bolster our league-leading defence. Best news of all was that John Vanbiesbrouck is healthy again. After spending 26 games on the bench -- watching sophmore Corey Schwab hold the fort with amazing ability -- with a severly pulled hamstring, he finally has been given the all-clear sign. In two games this week he had two wins and a GAA of 2.00 and a Save percentage of .929!! Corey will still split games with John for the remainder of the season, barring injury, but there should be no doubt that John is our #1 puck-stopper. Finally...in the up-coming week Toronto will face four clubs playing better than .500 (Corinthians, Quakers, Venom & Chiefs) and one club who is struggling, but seeming to play better after their latest trade flurry (Vikings). Our next game is a sort of Home-Coming for Alexei Zhamnov. Alex played two and a half seasons in Edmonton and was a fan favourite. He scored 234 points in 175 games, and twice led the Vikings into the playoffs. For the first time since the trade that sent him to Toronto, he will play back in Edmonton. It is expected to be an emotional game for him. the Voodoo ---------- Voodoo Noos- Things are on cruise control in Vancouver, as the team says it is already gearing up for the playoffs. Early you say, well yes but this team has one goal in mind, and that is the Cyber Cup. Paul Kariya: " That is our goal this year, and I believe it is attainable, while the math might not quite say so, I am pretty sure we have locked up a playoff spot, so now our focus will be preparing for our ultimate goal. Our team has really gelled this year, and despite what some clowns think, this team has a lot of heart, and we are very determined to reach our goal." Meanwhile rookie Danius Zubrus who was the Voodoo's 2nd pick in the WHL3 Entry Draft at 7th overall, is continuing to have a phenomenol season. He has been great on a line with Mike Modano and Ziggy Palffy from early on in the season, replacing Ryan Smyth on that line, who was struggling and subcequently traded. The 6'3" , 215 pound, native of Russia, has amassed 15 goals, 29 assists in 47 games for a total of 44 points and a +/- rating of 46. Mike Peca's struggles continue. After missing about 10 games earlier this season with a groin injury, and struggling to crack back into the lineup because of the groin, things have gotten worse and again he will be on the shelf. He should be out another 8 games, and hopefully this time the injury will heal fully. That is all from Vancouver. That's all for for this week. Thanks for reading!
