OffSides (The Official Magazine of the WHL) ------------------------------------------ Editor's Note ------------- Welcome to the new WHL Weekly. I am planning on keeping many of the features introduced by Marc Hebert during his stint as editor-in-chief, especially the statistics provided by Brian Howe, but also hope to introduce more columns and featured articles. This is my first effort and it will be far from my best. I hope to get some regular contributors from within the league, and look forward to putting out an interesting weekly. Special thanks go to the WHL's own stats-guru Brian Howe, who supplied the statistics, and to commish Mike Hebert, who helped out a great deal. Enjoy. Team News --------- Toronto Stallions ----------------- Sittler's After Five Report TORONTO(AP) - John Vanbiesbrouck's name was mentioned in a few trade rumours prior to the deadline. While we have been extremely happy with Corey's performance this season, with a 3.06 GAA and a 90.1 save percentage over 41 games, he is still a rookie and anything could happen. 'Bieser is a veteran puckstopper with career totals that tell a tale of a 90% save percentage in a great WHL career. We were trying to see what his value was on the market, unfortunately no one seemed to be too interested. Was John affected by this? Well, after two games this week that saw John stop 98.3% of the shots he faced and allowing only 1 goal on way to his 7th career shutout. John seems to have taken the rumours and used them to improve his season-long struggle. In front of John the Stallions played like they were gearing up for the playoffs. Over the five game period we allowed an average of 29 shots against while registering 37 for. They also scored an average of 4 goals for and only allowed an average of 2 goals against, thanks largely to John's performance. With 7 points in 10 games, 3g and 4a and 30+ shots. Ray has been sharing duties between two lines and seems to fit in with both our offensive centres. With 9 games remaining until the playoffs and Toronto guarenteed a spot, and currently vieing for #1 overall in the Wales Conference, I'd like to highlight some of the players whose efforts might have gone unnoticed. Guys like 'Bieser, Sakic & Richer have been honoured already, but over the next three reports I'd like to honour the guys who don't always get on the highlight reels. Andrei Nikolishin ----------------- An off-season pick up from the Fury, Andrei has been one of the most consistant players. With 65 games under his belt he has matched his season best 49 points, with a personal best 23 goals(5 of those were Game-Winners, another personal best). He has improved his defensive game and is listed as a +28, yet another personal best. Andrei has 6 PP goals, 1 SH goal, and 190 shots while only taking 41 penalty minutes. He has been a welcome addition to our attack. A young centre at 25, Toronto plans to keep him for a while; he has just signed a three year extension to his contract that still had 2 years remaining. Rusty Fitzgerald ---------------- A young checking winger, Rusty is spending his first full season in Toronto. We felt confident enough in Rusty's abilities to move Mike Keane this year. Mike was our top checking winger and we knew how important his game was to this club. Rusty is a player built in Mike's mold. He hits hard, skates fast and knows not to take too many penalties. He may not score 25/30 goals a season, but he will keep opposition lines from scoring too many against us. Rusty has set personal bests in Goals, Points, +/-, Game-Winners and Shots. And has tied a personal best in Assists. In 65 games he has 16 goals and 29 points with a +/- of +10. And with all that he only has 36 penalty minutes. At 26 years old, Rusty will be here for some time; he has just signed a 4 year deal, passing on free agency which might have made him a richer man. And finally, Boris Mironov ------------- Although his name came up at trade time, he was not moved. In fact Toronto had a chance to get Tverdovsky in a package deal involving Boris, but it was turned down. And two days later Boris was offered a contract. Boris is having a career year, after some off-season improvements to his game. Neither of his previous seasons will compare to how he has done this year. An off-season pickup from the Vikings, Boris has been a Power-Play sparkplug. In 62 games he has 51 points with 43 assists, and three of his eight goals have been Game Winners. He has assisted on almost every one of Sakic's 27 PP goals, and Joe says; "I would probably have about 5 or 6 PP goals without Boris back there!". Along with great offence, Boris is a workhorse in his own end. At +15 he has 155 penalty minutes, 2nd highest(to Miikka Elomo) on a team that takes few penalties. He has a toughness about him that is not expected. At 26 years old, he has been teamed with youngster Roman Hamrlik (2 time all-star), or veteran Shaun Chambers. He will be a Stallion for at least 4 years with a new contract. Finally...in the up-coming week Toronto will be on the road in Seattle, Chicoutimi, Winnipeg, Surrey and then Hamilton. We will face three clubs playing better than .500 (Sparrows, Wolves & Strangers) and two clubs who are under .500 (Saints, SteelCats). Our Record against: GP W L T GF GA Saints 1 1 0 0 4 1 Sparrows 2 1 1 0 6 7 Wolves 3 1 2 0 8 13 Strangers 2 1 1 0 7 9 SteelCats 3 3 0 0 19 10 By the time we play the Strangers we should have Boris Mironov back from injury and doctors tell us that Alexandre Mogilny will be back at 100%. D.S. Edmonton Vikings ---------------- There is not much doubt that this season has been a huge disappointment for the Vikings and their fans, but coming down the stretch coach Ken Hitchcock has seen enough positives that he's confident about next season. "Well the team is finally starting to come around offensively, which is the biggest plus. I mean Shanahan has scored all year but guys we expected more from like Dvorak and Deadmarsh to name two, are finally starting to put up numbers like we expected from them. We've won 6 of our last 10, and while it's not astounding, it's a definite start. We're also averaging 5 goals a game over the same stretch which is enough to win in any league." GM Lee McEwen made no moves at the deadline, reinforcing his belief in the team for next season. "There was alot of offers but nothing that would upgrade our talent level in the future. I was willing to take a hit this season as far as talent goes, but I wasn't going to sacrifice next year's team which I think has a chance to be a serious contender. This year has been a write-off but we had alot of guys go to the Olympics and play well and the chemistry in the room right now is as good as it has ever been. We'll be right up there this time next year and hopefully derail some team's playoff hopes coming down the stretch." This wasn't entirely unexpected as most teams made the majority of their moves earlier in the season and seemed content with their rosters heading into the final stretch drive. The big winners on deadline day so far seem to be the Penticton Venom, who managed to pick-up Brian Benning, Eric Manlow and Jim Sandlak, all of whom should help the Venom take on both the Strangers and the Voodoo in the tough Western Conference. One of the biggest surprises of this season has to be the emergence of the Hamilton Steelcats diminutive center Daniel Briere. Briere was drafted 7th overall in the WHL2 Entry Draft by the then Oakville Blades, and scored 21 goals and had only 5 assists in 59 games for the Steelcats last season. At press time he was 13th in the league in scoring with 80 points and with 47 goals, was closing in on the magical 50 goal plateau. Mired in a 10 game losing streak, the Seattle Saints are already in next-year country. The one plus Saints management has to look forward to is center Jason Allison who is currently playing with the WFHL's Saskatoon Ice Dogs. Allison whould be the Saints 2nd line center next season. Hey does anybody know where Alexei Zhamnov's skill went too? Zhamnov is having a decent year with the Stallions but he's a far cry from the 100 point player that terrorized defencemen when he was with the Edmonton Vikings. Saku Koivu is a great example of the sophmore slump. 78 points is enough to lead the defending Cyber Cup champion Kingston Corinthians, but this is a kid who scored 60 goals last season as a rookie. Kirk Maltby has to be a pleasant surprise for the Sparrows with 16 goals in 47 games. Shanahan scored 11 goals in 4 games, and was an oustanding +11 this past week as the Vikings went 3-1-0. Defenceman of the Week ---------------------- Al MacInnis, Edmonton Vikings MacInnis has been one of the league's best defencemen all season long and not even a trade to the hapless Vikings could slow his production down. MacInnis is leading the team in scoring and posted impressive totals of 2 goals, 5 assists and was a +10 in 4 games this week. Goaltender of the Week ---------------------- Jocelyn Thibault, Waterloo Lunatics When you've wrestled the starting job away from Patrick Roy, chances are you are a pretty good goaltender. T-Bo gave Wales Confernce opponents something to think about heading into the playoffs as he went 4-1-1 with one shutout and posted a miniscule 1.66 GAA combined with a .940 save percentage.
