I've been appointed the new OFFICIAL WHL NEWSMAN, so you'll remark some changes to the Weekly. They wanted to name me EDITOR IN CHIEF but that's way too much responsability for me so I was very happy when they told me I would only be the official newsman. The job is the same and I work for peanuts but it involves a lot less stress and fewer responsabilities. This week, we're welcoming Mr. Lars Nordekvist, who has replaced Kevin Nash and Stephen Crewe as GM of the Thunder. Mr. Nordekvist's first move was to move the team to Winnipeg and rename them the Wolves. Good luck! The Albany Mallrats, the league's champions, are having some problems so far this season, and are ranked 20th overall right now. The Kingston Corinthians, 4th overall in the league last season, are struggling as well, in spite of the fact that they have the best offense in the league, better even than the Rapids', who have 46 goals for. This week, it was easy to see who was hot and who was not, I only had to check the league stats, but I don't have enough time to go through every roster every week so in the future, EVERY GM must send me his nominations each week. ONLY THE PLAYERS FOR WHOM I HAVE RECEIVED THE STATS WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO BE PLAYER OF THE WEEK OR GOALIE OF THE WEEK. A week includes EVERY GAME PLAYED BETWEEN SUNDAY AND THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY. Nominations must be in by the following Wednesday. The first player of the week for this second season of the WHL is Alexei Zhamnov of the Vikings. Zhamnov had a total of 13 goals and 6 assists in the first 10 games for a grand total of 19 points. The runners up are Owen Nolan, also of the Vikings, and Jeremy Roenick of the Krushers. It will allow people to have a second look at the trades. 6- TRADING BLOCK: If you have any players you want to trade, send their names to me and I will include them in this section of the Weekly. 7- INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL HEBERT, GM OF THE CHICOUTIMI SPARROWS: This week, we're offering our readers an exclusive interview with Michael Hebert, the GM of one of the most improved teams so far this season in the WHL. Q. Your team, after having one of the worst starts in the WHL last season, seems to be playing a lot better this season, being first in the Adams division after 10 games. How do you explain that? A. I think the players have been really playing as a team since the beginning of the season. Turgeon was off to an incredible start before getting injured (courtesy of Quakers defenseman Joe Reekie, who got suspended for that), and Berard is one of the best defenseman in the league so far in the season. All the team is playing well. There is also a change in the way Gilbert Perreault is coaching the team. Last year, he tried to be fair to everyone, giving them all ice time to prove themselves. This year, he always puts his best elements on the ice, and that's why we win. Q. What changes were made this summer in order to improve the team? How do you think these changes are affecting the team? A. Not very many changes actually. Besides the 4 draft picks who made the big club (Berard, Tucker, Vopat and Denis), I think there is only Stan Neckar who is new in the team. So we have pretty much the same team as last year. I think it helps when the players know each other and, as I have always said, when they don't play with the fear of being traded. Q. Felix Potvin really seems to be playing great, what do you think has been the key to his success so far this season? A. He is really confident. I think our new defensemen help him a lot. I mean, Berard, Neckar and Heward makes for a considerable improvement compared to Wortman, Rumble, Nelson and Bowen. Also, Jiri Slegr has improved his defensive play during the summer. Felix is really confident, he knows that he is not alone out there, forced to stop everything by himself. Q. With all the injuries you've had since the beginning of the season, Pierre Turgeon, Sergei Brylin, Janne Laukannen and Scott Lachance, who's filling those holes? Are you expecting to make some personnel moves in the near future? A. The loss of Lachance and Laukkanen forced us to rely on young defensemen. Heward is replacing Laukkanen really well, and Svensson wasn't bad at all either, even if he didn't get any points. In the case of Turgeon and Brylin, we already had 6 playable centers on the team, so it wasn't that important a loss. Of course, it is very disappointing to see Turgeon get injured by a frustrated player, and it will surely affect the team. We really haven't been lucky since the beginning of the season. I mean, 4 players down in 9 games! I hope the other players will stay healthy for the rest of the season. Q. Your team is playing in a really tough division, the strongest last season, and even if the WHL champions, the Albany Mallrats, and the President's Trophy Winners, the Minneapolis Monarchs, left, the Adams division is still very strong, with the Corinthians, the Grunts and the Norsemen. Do you think your team will be able to keep pace until the end of the season? A. I really don't know. I must admit I am surprised myself by how well the Sparrows have been playing since the beginning of the season. I hope the guys will continue to work hard, and we'll see! Q. Do you think that there are some players in your team who aren't playing up to expectations? A. Not really. Last year, I had a lot of problems with Juneau, but he is doing fine this year. I was a little worried about Kelly Miller and Tony Amonte. They started slowly, but both have been playing better lately. Q. You have two rookies in your lineup that are playing some very good hockey: Brian Berard and Darcy Tucker. Do you think they can continue to play at the same rythm all season? A. Once again, I hope so! Berard is very talented, I expect him to finish among the best defensemen this year. As for Tucker, since the injuries to Brylin and Turgeon, he's our number one center. He's got all the ice time to prove himself, and he plays great. Thanks for your time, I know it's precious, and good luck to the Sparrows! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send comments, suggestions, NOMINATIONS... to: MARC HEBERT Official WHL newsman fj491599@er.uqam.ca Temporary address (until 28/10/96): ei953608@uqac.uquebec.ca CAUTION!
