Stallions Report Card Is Nearly Straight A's

Toronto, ON - The Stallions have made a few tweaks to their roster and it hasn't hurt them one bit. They extend their record unbeaten streak to 18 games by going 8-0-2 in the past ten. They outscored the competition by a total of 52-31, and outshot them by 411-309. The single biggest improvement has been special teams, the powerplay scored 14 goals on 51 chances. Penalty killing suffered a bit as they allowed 13 goals on 49 chances but they did manage to score 3 short-handed goals.

A mid-season report on the club rates the team a solid A+. A breakdown runs like this:

Center Rating: A

Player Rating Record Projected Record

                             G A PTS +/- PP S G A PTS +/- PP S

Joe Sakic -- A+ -- 22 39 61 23 11 193 46 82 128 48 23 405

Eric Lindros -- A+ -- 31 25 56 39 17 192 65 53 118 82 36 403

Mark Smith -- B+ -- 6 9 15 5 4 76 13 19 32 11 8 160

Andrei Nikolishin -- D -- 2 0 2 0 0 24 -- -- -- -- -- ---

Joe is on pace for a record year while Eric is just off of last years pace. Both are clearly leading this club, they could both be named as team MVP at this point, Joe has a slight edge at this point though. Mark Smith is playing in his first year and is tied for 14th in scoring with three other rookies. Andrei Nikolishin is actively searching for a team that will give him ice time as he continues to watch from the press box this season.

Overall: The Center position is playing well with the top two leading the way and the third guy playing well considering he is a rookie.

Left Wing Rating: A

Player Rating Record Projected Record

                             G A PTS +/- PP S G A PTS +/- PP S

Miroslav Satan -- A+ -- 25 15 40 23 4 150 53 32 85 48 8 315

Geoff Sanderson -- A- -- 12 25 37 29 4 156 25 53 78 61 8 328

Shayne Corson -- A -- 17 14 31 6 5 127 36 29 65 13 10 267

Miikka Elomo -- B -- 13 9 22 9 0 112 27 19 46 19 0 235

Derek King -- B- -- 8 9 17 7 0 72 17 19 36 15 0 151

Satan is set to blow away his personal best for a season. Sanderson is just a little off of last years record setting season. Corson is on pace to just beat his personal best, but it must be remembered that most of those points are from his Hawks days. Elomo is playing the third line and is on pace to duplicate his second best ever record. He in on pace to decimate the club record for penalty minutes in a season, currently held by Wendel Clark at 265, with 340. What is amazing is he already has 162 and has yet to be suspended. Derek King is a fourth line player and his 17 current points paces him for 36, which is just under his seasonal average of 42.

Overall: The Left Wing is arguably our deepest position since the Corson deal. We could play any of the five guys and be satisfied with what they bring. Our top three guys are offensively dangerous and Elomo will continue to police the ice for us.

Right Wing Rating: B+

Player Rating Record Projected Record

                             G A PTS +/- PP S G A PTS +/- PP S

Zigmund Palffy -- A+ -- 19 21 40 27 2 157 40 44 84 57 4 330

Brett Hull -- A+ -- 20 13 33 21 4 121 50 34 84 58 9 254

Brian Bellows -- D -- 4 3 7 0 0 38 8 7 15 0 0 80

Palffy and Sakic continue to provide a one-two punch unprecedented in this league. Ziggy is on pace for his second consecutive 40 goal season and an 84 point season would be his second best ever. Brett Hull has been nothing short of fabulous since arriving. He has scored 23 points in 20 games for Toronto, and at THAT pace he could have 84 points with 50 goals. Regardless he is on pace for a career year. Heinze was a disappointment this year and was moved, leaving a hole on the right side. Presently being filled by Miikka Elomo. Bellows is a fourth line player and his current pace will see him get half his usual production.

Overall: The Right Wing is strong but shallow. Our top two guys are powerfully offensive but an injury in this position will have us calling up help from the farm and Right Wing is no stronger down there.

Defence Rating: A

Steve Duchesne -- A+ -- 6 26 32 27 0 70 13 55 68 57 0 147

Teppo Numminen -- A -- 5 22 27 35 1 56 11 46 57 74 2 118

Deron Quint -- A -- 5 21 26 12 0 41 11 44 55 25 0 86

Michal Sykora -- B -- 0 17 17 7 0 21 0 36 36 15 0 44

Don Sweeney -- B -- 3 12 15 11 0 24 6 25 31 23 0 50

Kevin Dahl -- B -- 1 11 12 15 0 22 -- -- -- -- -- ---

J.J. Daigneault -- A -- 1 6 7 2 0 5 6 35 41 12 0 29

Defence is another deep position for Toronto. Led by Leetch, who is on pace for 69 points this season. Duchesne is on pace 68, one shy of his personal best. Teppo has tailed off from last years record season but will still tally about 57 points, still well above his average. Newcomer Deron Quint is pacing himself to 55 points which would be a personal best. Sykora can't score to save his life, but will still get about 36 points, which is his seasonal average. Sweeney and Dahl are playing there averages. The big surprise has been Daigneault. Called up nine games ago he has 7 points. At that pace, for the next 44 games he could amass 41 points!

Overall: Defensively this club is sound. Old but sound. And if they can continue their remarkable play, this club could steamroll themselves quite a distance before being challenged.

Goaltending Rating: A+

Player Rating Record Projected Record

Curtis Joseph -- A+ -- 2.67 22 4 4 1 .911 ---- 48 9 9 2 ----

Dwayne Roloson -- A+ -- 2.09 7 1 1 1 .931 ---- 11 3 3 2 ----

Joseph is leading the league in every goaltending category except shut-outs. He is the main reason our forwards and defence can pinch and take the chances they do. He has been nothing short of amazing since coming to Toronto and could improve on his personal best of 47 wins in a season. It will come down to how many games will Roloson get in the remaining 44. Dwayne came in to cover for a defeated Brian Finley and has been spectacular in his 9 starts. Seven wins and shut-out is something he credits the players for not himself. But he has faced a few tough teams and held his own.

Overall: Goaltending is not a problem for this club. Cujo will backstop them as far as they want to go. Roloson will back him up all the way.

The Right wing has to be a source of concern for this club, look for them to move a defenceman to fill the gaping hole in that position before the trade deadline.

This upcoming ten game stretch sees Toronto play division rival Oakville three times, as well as powerhouses such as the Express, Voodoo and Sparrows. To come out of this week with a .500 average will be a challenge. It is almost assured that their 18 game unbeaten streak will see its end before the next magazine issue.

Pittsburgh Happy With Moves

Pittsburgh, PA - Latest news from the Endless is a trade that was made with the Hawks. It was yet another move to make the team a little younger and more talented. Shipped away were Nylander & Lilja while Johansson, Raycroft & Elich came our way. Breaking down the trade we lose pretty big right now, but with Johansson ripping things up in the NHL we expect him to get a nice re-rate. Raycroft & Elich are prospects we like and will hope for. Lilja was nowhere near a place in the team so shipping him will not effect anything. All in all the only position affected by the trade will be our center position Nylander leaves the 4th line duties open and streaking Korolev will be happy to see himself inserted into the team.

Top 5 Forwards this season:
1. John Madden - 28
2. Martin Rucinsky - 27

Top 3 Defenders this season:
1. Kim Johnsson - 24
2. Radoslav Suchy - 18
3. Remi Royer - 14

Top Rookie this season:

Dropkicks Welcome New Year

Hartford, CT - 2001 was a strange and tumultuous one, one with a third place finish in 2000-2001 and nothing short of sheer frustration thus far in 2001-2002. Coaching changes, players demanding to be moved and players moved to usher in a younger line-up have made for plenty of news but far too few points. If the playoffs were to begin today the ‘Kicks would be in by the skin of their teeth, not exactly what fans expected even after the heartless playoff performance last year versus the Dominators.
We’ve compiled a list of New Year’s resolutions for individuals on New England’s favorite WHL franchise.

Mario Lemieux- Continue to play at the point per game level. Lemieux inherited a mess when he accepted the “C” off of Doug Weight’s jersey. We believe he can and will help turn this ship around. It’s a job that only a Hall of Famer could hope to accomplish.

Pavel Bure- Get healthy and stay healthy. He’s been fantastic when he’s played but he will have missed 14 games if he returns when expected. He’s the reason they sided with Tom Fowler (yes, the coach that was canned earlier this season) in the fight between he and Teemu Selanne. Playing with Mario should be a step up from playing with Dougie Weight too.

Olaf Kolzig- Be the goalie that you said you can be. The Dropkicks granted Kolzig’s wish when they banished Chris Osgood to the Icedogs. Now he has to show that he can play 9 out of 10 games. The consensus says that Marty Turco isn’t ready yet but if Kolzig isn’t careful, Turco may still get a chance to prove that theory wrong.

Joe Thornton- ??? Where do we start. Great hopes have been pinned on this guy. 3 goals in 38 games isn’t nearly enough even if he does have 19 assists. Coach Adam Rettschlag has moved him to left wing to play with Lemieux (and Bure when he returns to the lineup) and that is about all a 22 year old with massive expectations could ask for.

Mike Comrie- Prove Kordyback right. Many scoffed at Kordyback for trading Kyle Mclaren and Jason Spezza for Comrie, Marek Malik and a pick. Comrie has shown the desire and ability to play in the WHL after an apprenticeship in the WFHL. He’ll play with Chris Drury and Radek Dvorak most nights if Thornton sticks on the top line. Rettschlag was adamant about Comrie playing here this season, leading to the departure of Jeff Halpern. While his performance thus far has impressed fans and management, Mighty Mike has time to develop and the Dropkicks will be as patient with him as they will be with Thornton.

Random Kicks: This reporter would like to thank Al Stricken for his great work of late. His reporting on the Dropkicks, while usually totally inaccurate, has freed up time to work on my golf swing. Keep up the good work, or at least keep up the work. I love the free time.
Don’t expect many changes in the lineup from now until the end of the year. At the team’s annual New Year’s Kareoke Party it was decided that Guinness beer is the best, Viktor Kozlov does a mean version of David Lee Roth’s Just a Gigolo, and that this team would win as it is or lose as it is.

Bulls Have Trouble Gaining Ground in the Race for the Division Lead

Oakville, ON - As the midpoint of the season is reached the Oakville Bulls are left with a bit of a dilemma on there hands. The problem is that, even though the Bulls have played well so far this season, yet there is still more the Bulls are capable of. They simply have not had the opportunity to regain any of the ground they lost to the Stallions over the last twenty games as a direct result of the Stallions long unbeaten streak.

"It's not a matter of our team playing poorly over the last twenty games by any means. It's simply the fact that the Stallions have yet to make any sort of mistake that would give us(Bulls) the opportunity to catch back up to the division lead that we lost to them", said Oakville Bulls GM Chris Kubinec.

The Toronto Stallions are currently the best team in the WHL with a comfortable lead at 61 points overall. 'IF' the Bulls plan on making the Stallions work hard to keep first place in the Central Division, then Oakville desperately needs to put together a few more of their own five or six game winning streaks. "The amount of injuries we've (Bulls) had this year is ridiculous, there's no question, but that's no excuse for the Bulls not having the opportunity to battle the Stallions atop the division as the midpoint of the season passes", says coach Jacques Martin.

The Bulls now have one of the most talented teams in the WHL on paper with all of their recent dealings, and they look like the very strong playoff team that GM Kubinec promised the fans of Oakville would have for the playoffs this season. "All I can say is that it would be great if we(Bulls) came back and battled for the President's trophy this season, but that is definitely not our goal. Our focus is on the playoffs now, winning the division and maybe even challenging for the President's trophy are just bonuses. What matters is where you finish in the 'real' season (playoffs), and that's how people usually grade success and remember you", said Bulls GM Kubinec.

It can be expected that trade talks involving the Bulls will quiet down for the next week or two so that the Bulls management and coaching staff can properly assess player performance. This will include such things as seeing how new line combinations will work, player chemistry, and how well plays and defensive strategies are executed now that the Bulls roster will stabilize for the next little while.

I'm Michael Landsberg reporting.
'And that's the bottom line!...here in Oakville, Ontario!'.

Daily Bullz-Eye

- A local Chi-Town newspaper reported yesterday that Krusher's GM Jessy "The Body" Golbez and Jeremy "I'll throw a temper-tantrum if Golbez doesn't let me have another 'peek' at his sister" Roenick were both seen by pedestrians speeding away from 'The Kold Center' in Boston (where the Dropkicks play some of their home games). As they sped away like a hurricane, as fast as one might run away from a glimpse of Golbez's mother, Kold Center security reported that the entire ice surface had been covered in jello. We're still awaiting more news on this developing story.

- After Hawks GM Peter Nilsson dealt away, at the time, team captain Kirk Muller, power forward Shane Corson demanded a trade. Nobody as of yet has been given an exact answer as to why, but it is believed that Corson was very upset with GM Nilsson and the Hawks organization for supposedly giving up on competing in this year's playoffs. The Stallions were the first to grab away veteran Corson, as he still has the ability to produce and further help the Stallions on their quest for the Cup.

- There has been some rumors surrounding Dropkicks sniper Pavel Bure as of late in regards to his latest injury. Apparently, Bure was scheduled to return to action last week, but after injuring a disc in his back the night prior to his scheduled return, he was put back on the IR and should be back after four more games. *Sidenote: Bure was with a 27 year old brunette, she is currently helping nurse him back to good health.

Victoria Longshot To Make Playoffs

Victoria, BC - The season has been mediocre as the Isles have been 5-5-0 over last ten. Isles are fairly competitive with the bottom half of the league but have real problems playing the upper echelon. There's been no dominant player over the past 40 games, let alone 10, but a general scoring of 5-7 points per player shows all lines were contributing on modest levels. The biggest jolt was individual plus/minus which got hit hard during our worst losses. On a positive note, 'goals for' finally exceeded 'goals against'. The game 40 report says Isles with 37 points are a longshot to make the playoffs.

Players on the Block. Isles gm has been very busy the last 4 months, but will look and respond to all offers. I am happy with our few stars being Nedved, Mironov and our young D. Not interested in trading from the farm kids unless it's for another well rated prospect.

Boston Hawks News

Boston, MA - I've just gotten back to Boston after having watched the Hawks away game against the Hollywood SeaWolves. The Hawks finally managed to break a 10 game losing streak as they beat the SeaWolves 6-3.

During the Christmas and New Year break the Hawks management made some drastic changes to the Hawks' roster. Gone are veterans Kirk Muller and Shayne Corson. With the team are now players like Steve Heinze and Michael Nylander. In the Hawks first game after the break against the Enforcers it was apparent that the team hadn't had the chance to find each other. The Hawks' passing game was terrible and it was thanks to goalie J-F Damphousse that the Hawks only surrendered 3 goals in that game.

In yesterday's game against the SeaWolves the Boston players had had some time to play together and the teams passing had improved significantly. The recent trades seem to have awaken first line center Steve Sullivan. One other reason to Sully playing better might also be the fact that he is now the new captain of the Hawks. Assistant captains are now Michael Nylander and Sergei Zubov.

Dallas Drake has also gotten bigger responsibilities now that Shayne Corson is gone. Drake has been playing on the fourth line ever since he came to the Hawks earlier this season. Now he is playing on the second line together with Steve Heinze and Michael Nylander. This newly composed line played great hockey in last nights game.

Player G A Pts Shts +/- PIM

Mikael Nylander 0 2 2 4 1 0

Steve Heinze 0 1 1 3 1 2

Marcus Ragnarsson 0 1 1 0 1 0

Kenny Jonsson 0 0 0 2 1 0
The Hawks' first line looks the same now as it did before the break. Sully, Berezin and Murray are playing in front of Svehla and Zubov. Rumors are however saying that Svehla has asked to be traded from the Hawks. This line scored three of the Hawks goals in last nights game.

These trades may have turned things around for the Hawks but the question is if they were good trades in the long run. Well, we hope so but one can never know. Almost all of the Hawks players on the pro team are now aged between 28-32. This team has a couple of years before they have to rebuild their whole team.

Despite that the Hawks lost 10 straight games they are not in any way out of the playoff race. They are currently in 10th place in the conference but are only two points away from a playoff spot. It is only 8 points up to the Dominators in 4th place. Nothing can be done about the top three teams in the conference. The Vancouver Voodoo, The Chi-Town Krushers and the Rocky Mountain Express will be fighting for the title in the Campbell conference.

Can Montreal's Latest Changes Turn The Tide?

Montreal, QC - Montreal improved much the last ten games going 5-4-1 34-39. And they have managed to play much better defensively not allowing the opposing team to shoot 50 shots a game. Much of that new strength comes from great play by call-ups Andy Sutton and Bill Houlder. Montreal is currently sitting in 9th place only 2 points behind Bears for that last playoff spot Montreal always seems to get in the end, to much despair for Saskatoon. If only the injuries could end and the new faces keep producing we are in for a tremendous battle the next 10 games. Don't be surprised to see Montreal in a playoff position after the next 10 games. Worth to mention might be that Petr Sykora leads the scoring with 23 goals so far. NONE other have managed to put up TEN?? That's an MVP candidate for you.

Corinthians Mid-Season Evaluation

Quebec City, QC

The good:

Jaromir Jagr - A+
Jagr is definitely the offensive leader of the Corinthians. Arguably the best player in the league, Jagr stands 3rd in league scoring with 59 points and leads the league for goals with 34, while keeping a +16 record. He his definitely giving the Corinthians what they expect of him.

Mark Recchi - A+
Newcomer Mark Recchi has been great since he came over from Pittsburgh, collecting 8 goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 14 games while maintaining a +4 record. All his goals were even strength.

Keith Tkachuk - A
Assistant captain Tkachuk is producing at his usual rythem, playing a very physical game and collecting his fair share of points. He his among the league leaders for penalty minutes yet is still producing at a point per game ratio.

Mats Sundin - A-
Team captain Mats Sundin had a difficult start but after a tremendous game where he scored 7 goals and added 1 assist, things came back to normal for the veteran center. He had only 5 goals before this game and he now has 19. His 27 assists place him among the leaders in this category and he's currently 14th in the league for scoring.

Adrian Aucoin - A-
Most people will agree that Aucoin is not a #1 defenseman, but that's what is expected of him in Quebec for lack of a better defenseman and so far, Aucoin has fared pretty well in that role. Since coming over from the Dropkicks, Aucoin has 3 goals and 12 assists in 22 games and he's +8. There are questions wether he'll be able to keep up that pace but so far Aucoin is having a very good season.

Mathieu Biron - B+
Giant-size defenseman Mathieu Biron is a defensive minded defenseman and this part of his game has been very good so far. The surprise his is offensive production. So far, Biron has 3 goals and 17 assists and he's +14, while playing a good physical game.

Karel Rachunek - B
Rookie Karel Rachunek had a difficult start in the big league, keeping one of the worst +/- records on the the team in the first 25 games. Offensively things were going good but defense was really an issue. In the last 15 games though, he kept up his scoring pace and has really steadied his defensive game. He was +10 in the last 10 games, while collecting 2 goals and 8 assists. He looks like he'll have a shot at the All-Rookie team at the end of the season.

Dean McAmmond - B-
McAmmond has been a steady 3rd line performer since coming over from Pittsburgh, contributing offensively while playing a good defensive game. McAmmond has 3 goals and 5 assists in 14 games and is +5 with the Corinthians.

The decent:

Brent Sopel - C+
Rookie Brent Sopel has fared well as a 7th dman, having very little ice time yet making a good impression with what little of it he's has so far. Vincent Lecavalier - C+
Young Lecavalier was off to a very good start but has slowed down in the last 20 games. Has to work on his consistency in order to become a steady 1st or 2nd line performer. He has 8 goals and 13 assists in 36 games and is -2, which is not bad but more can be expected of him.

Brent Johnson - C+
Rookie backup goaltender Brent Johnson has played more than everyone expected at the beginning of the season and has fared pretty well, keeping a 7-6-1 record in 14 games. He's not quite a #1 goaltender yet but look for him to gain in confidence and improve in the second half.

Chris Phillips - C
Phillips is playing a good defense but more i expected of him offensively. Once a great prospect, Phillips is taking forever to develop but he's having a decent season so far and the Corinthians hope he'll come around offensively eventually. He's currently +11.

Jose Theodore - C
Theo is not really playing like he should, making great incredible saves one moment and letting in soft goals seconds later. Has to improve his concentration in order to become a great WHL starter.

Stephane Quintal - C-
Quintal is having a difficult season so far. Primarily a defensive dman, this side of his games isn't that good with a -3 record at press time.

Chris Simon - C-
Simon has suffered from the trade of Martin Rucinsky, being pushed into the 2nd line lw position while he should be a 3rd-4th liner. Look to him having a better second half with the arrival of Chris Gratton relieving him of some pressure.

The Ugly:

Patrick Poulin - D+
4th line center Patrick Poulin has been decent most of the times but more can be expected of the former QJMHL scoring champ. Look for Poulin to either loose his starting job soon or being shipped elsewhere in the WHL.

Jason Ward - D+
Young Jason Ward isn't really performing like he should to gain a regular shift on the Corinthians' 3rd or 4th line. He has the talent, the question is does he have the will?

Saku Koivu - D
Veteran Koivu is having a horrible season so far. He has missed 11 games due to an injury and has played injured through about 15 games. Saku has only 6 goals and 7 assists in 29 games this season and is -5. He has now played 6 games with best friend Mark Recchi since being activated from injury reserve and has collected 5 points in those games so look for him to have a far better second half.

Sheldon Souray - D
Sheldon's greatest asset is his physical game but he has been reluctant to show this side of his game too often this season. Look for him to fall on the depth chart if he doesn't start hitting soon.

Stephane Robidas - D
The diminutive rookie dman has struggled so far this season, being a healthy scratch in 16 of the team's games. Has to work on consistency in order to become a regular in the WHL.
Oleg Petrov - E
Russian Oleg Petrov has been playing terrible in the first half. He's the worst player on the Corinthians' roster with a -13 and has only 4 goals.

Brian Savage - E
Veteran Brian Savage is really playing uninspired hockey. He's been a healthy scratch in 2 games and look for that to happen more often if he doesn't start scoring some goals.

Overall:

In my book, the Corinthians are an A team playing like a B team. They are currently 4th in their division and 6th in the Conference. This is not the first time the Corinthians struggle through the first half though and they are usually stronger in the second half. They are only 9 points out of the division's first place and seem committed to improve their record right now, as the addition of Chris Gratton for their 1st pick for next draft shows so don't count them out. Through the first quarter of the season, the Corinthians had the league's worst offense and they are now in the top 10 in the league in this category so the Corinthians are a team to watch for the second half.

The team's biggest problem seems to be their lack of a #1 dman. The Corinths have a good group of defensemen but there's not really one that stands out as a #1. There's too many #3 and #4 defensemen on this team.

Vikings News and Notes

Edmonton, AB - As the all-star break approaches the Vikings continue to struggle in their attempts to become more than a .500 club. The team's record against winning teams is putrid and it appears that they are still a few years away from being able to compete with the WHL's elite. What remains baffling is the team's inability to assert themselves on home ice. They have the second best road record in the league but are 9-13-3 at home. One of the biggest factors has been the team's penalty killing at the Ice Palace which is operating at a Fort Chevy's like 71.3%. The coaching staff knows that has to be improved for the Vikings to have a shot at a small run in the playoffs.

The team cleared up some of the logjam on the left side when they moved disappointing left-winger Chris Gratton to the Quebec City Corinthians in exchange for a 1st and 5th rounder in this year's draft. Gratton was acquired at the deadline last year but never established himself as a bona fide 2nd line winger.

Jamie Storr's struggles of late are raising some eyebrows and rumours persist that Lee McEwen is willing to move some top-line talent to acquire a #1 goaltender.

The team is happy with the play of several prospects this year including Jason Chimera, Jani Rita and Ben Clymer.

(Taking a biographical and statistical look at superstars of today and tomorrow)

This month we look at Steve Yzerman from the Des Moines Dominators

NHL History:

Steve Yzerman was drafted fourth overall in the 1983 Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. That year, he made his NHL debut on October 5 with a goal and an assist against the Jets. Later that season, he played in the mid-season All-Star Game. At year's end, Steve was an All-Rookie Team forward and had set team rookie records for goals (39) and points (87). He was named The Sporting News' Rookie of the Year and was the runner-up to the Calder Trophy behind Tom Barrasso. More importantly, Steve helped the Red Wings improve 12 points in the standings to make the playoffs for the first time in six years. In four playoff matches, Steve scored three goals and six points.

In 1984-85, Steve led the Red Wings with 59 assists and finished tied for second in team scoring with 89 points. The Red Wings again made the playoffs and Steve scored two goals in three games. In 1985-86, Steve scored 42 points in 50 games before suffering a broken collarbone that sidelined him for the balance of the season. The team dropped 26 points in the standings that season and missed the playoffs. In 1986-87, Steve succeeded Danny Gare as team captain and paced the team with 59 assists, 90 points and 217 shots on net. He led the Red Wings to a 38-point improvement to finish second in the Norris Division. In the post-season, Steve scored 18 points in 16 games and led the Red Wings to the Campbell Conference finals.

In 1987-88, Steve led the Red Wings to a 15-point improvement to win the Norris Division season title with 41 wins and 93 points. Steve played in his second All-Star Game and paced the team with 50 goals, 52 assists, 102 points and a +30 plus-minus rating, all despite playing only 64 games. On March 1, Steve suffered a right knee injury that caused him to miss the final 16 games of the regular season and the first 13 games of the playoffs. Steve returned in the Campbell Conference finals and scored four points in three games.

In 1988-89, Steve led the Red Wings to their second straight Norris Division season title and set team records for goals (65), assists (90) and points (155). During the season, he posted a 28-game scoring streak. He won the Pearson Award for being selected by his peers as the most outstanding player and finished as the second runner-up to both the Hart Trophy (league MVP) and Art Ross Trophy (scoring). He also set a team record with a 28-game point streak (November 1 to January 4) and played in his third All-Star Game. In six playoff games, he scored five goals and ten points.

In 1989-90, Steve paced the Red Wings with 62 goals, 65 assists, 127 points, 16 power-play goals, seven short-handed goals, eight game-winning goals and 332 shots on net. He played in his fourth mid-season All-Star Game, but the Red Wings missed the playoffs. In 1990-91, Steve paced his team with 51 goals, 57 assists, 108 points, 12 power play-goals, six short-handed goals and 326 shots on net. He played in his fifth All-Star Game and helped the Red Wings make the playoffs. In the post-season, he scored six points in seven games.

In 1991-92, Steve helped the Red Wings win their third Norris Division season title in five years. He played in his sixth All-Star Game and led the Red Wings with 45 goals, 58 assists, 103 points, eight short-handed goals, nine game-winning goals and 295 shots. In the playoffs, he led the Red Wings to the second round with eight points in 12 games. In 1992-93, he played in his seventh All-Star (sixth in a row) and led his team with 58 goals, 79 assists, 137 points, seven short-handed goals, 307 shots and a +33 plus-minus rating. While the team dropped to second in the Norris Division, they actually improved to 103 points and set a team record with 47 wins. In February, he won Player of the Week (February 16), scored his 1,000th career point (February 23 against the Sabres) and Player of the Month honours. In the post-season, he scored seven points in seven games.

In 1993-94, Steve missed 26 games with a herniated disc, but still managed to scored 24 goals and 82 points on the season. Upon his return from injury, Steve scored in 11 straight games (December 27 to January 19). On February 21, he won Player of the Week honours after scoring ten points in four games. By year's end, the Red Wings had won the Central Division title with 46 wins and 100 points. In the playoffs, he scored four points in three games. At year's end, he underwent surgery to remove the herniated disc from his neck.

In the shortened 1994-95 season, Steve scored 38 points in 47 games and led the Red Wings to the Presidents' Trophy championship. In the playoffs, Steve helped the Red Wings win the Clarence Campbell Bowl in the Western Conference finals before falling to the Devils in the finals. In 15 playoff games, Steve scored 12 points. In 1995-96, Steve captained the Red Wings to their second-straight Presidents' Trophy championship with a league record 62 wins. Steve led the team with 16 power play goals and was a finalist (third place) for the Selke Trophy. On January 17, he scored his 500th goal. In the playoffs, he led the Red Wings to the Western Conference finals before losing to the Avalanche. In the Conference semi-finals against the Blues, he scored the series winner in double overtime of game seven. In 18 playoff games, he scored 20 points.

In 1996-97, Steve paced the Red Wings with 63 assists and played in his eighth All-Star Game. On February 19, 1997, Steve played in his 1,000th game (three assists against the Flames). While the team dropped to second in the Central Division in the regular season, they won both the Clarence Campbell Bowl in the Western Conference finals and the Stanley Cup in the finals (against the Flyers). The Stanley Cup championships was the Red Wings first in 42 years. In 20 games, Steve scored 13 points.

In 1997-98, Steve led the Red Wings with 45 assists, 69 points and two short-handed goals. For the second straight year, the Red Wings finished second in the Central Division. In the playoffs, the Red Wings again charged their way to a Stanley Cup championship, collecting their third Clarence Campbell Bowl in four years along the way. Steve led all scorers with 18 assists and 24 points and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for being selected the most valuable player in the playoffs.

In 1998-99, Steve led the Red Wings to a Central Division title and paced the team with 74 points and 13 power play goals. He was also voted to start in the mid-season All-Star Game but missed the contest with an injury. In the playoffs, Steve led the Red Wings to the second round with nine goals in ten games. In 1999-2000, Steve and the Red Wings finished second in the Central Division despite improving 15 points to finish at 108. Steve led the team with 79 points and 15 power play goals and was a First Team All-Star at year's end. He also played in his ninth All-Star Game and won his first Selke Trophy as the best defensive forward. In November, Steve scored his 1,500th point on the 20th, played in his 1,200th game on the 24th and scored his 600th goal on the 26th. In eight playoff games, Steve recorded four assists.

In 2000-01, Steve led the Red Wings to their sixth division title in ten years. Despite being limited to 54 games, he scored 18 goals and 52 points. On January 26, he moved past Phil Esposito into sixth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,591 points. On February 23, Steve scored his 1,600th point.

In 1994-95 before the start of the NHL season, Steve played a number of games on tour with Wayne Gretzky's 99 All-Stars.

Steve first won a bronze medal with Canada at the 1983 World Junior Championships. In August 1984, he won a gold medal with Canada's national team at the Canada Cup tournament. In April 1985, he won a silver medal at the World Championships. Four years later at the 1989 World Championships, he won another WC silver medal. At the 1990 World Championships, Steve won the Best Forward directorate award.

In August 1996, Steve won a silver medal with Canada at the World Cup of Hockey. In February 1998, he scored two points at the Winter Olympics in Nagano.

On March 23, 2001, Steve was named to the 2002 Canadian Olympic team.

Steve grew up in the Ottawa suburb of Nepean, Ontario. The city celebrated Steve Yzerman day on November 2, 1996 and renamed the Nepean Sportsplex's hockey rink to the Steve Yzerman Hockey Arena.

WHL History:

Steve Yzerman was drafted in the 2th round (34th overall) by the Boston Agents (Now the Boston Hawks) in the WHL Entry Draft. Steve was traded to the Bridge City Huskies (Now the Mississauga Vipers) on February 10, 1996. One month later, on March 14, 1996, he was traded to the Newfoundland Gangstaz (Now the Quebec City Corinthians). Two weeks later, on April 1, 1996, he was moved to the Oakville Raptors (Now the Seattle Saints). On March 8, 1997 he was traded to the Waterloo Warriors (Now the Victoria Islanders). He spent the next three years here and watched the team change from the Warriors to the Penticton Venom to the Islanders.

While the team was in Penticton they were the story of the 1998-1999 (WHL-4) season. The club finished 5th in the Campbell conference and 10th in the league that year, and entered the playoffs with little hope. In the opening round they managed to upset the Edmonton Vikings in 7 games. They then faced the second best team in the Campbell conference, Vancouver Voodoo, and again surprised the favourite with a 7 game series win. They went on to face the leagues top team, and Cup favourite, Surrey Strangers (Now the Rocky Mountain Express). They embarrassed the Strangers in 6 games to go to the finals against the second best team in the league, the Kingston Corinthians (Now the Quebec City Corinthians). They lost the first game in Kingston, but completed the Cinderella story with four straight wins, finishing the way they started; on the road.

Steve spent two more years with the franchise before being traded to the Oakville Bulls on October 29, 2000. Less than two months later, on December 13, 2000, he was moved to the Mississauga Icedogs. He was finally moved, on April 2, 2001, to the Des Moines Dominators prior to the trade deadline that year.

Steve Yzerman has appeared in only one All-Star weekend, that occuring last year. Steve has never represented Canada in the Olympics, having been passed over in 1998. While not being mentioned on Canada's roster earlier, he is currently being scouted by Team Canada officials and is expected to be a lock to play for his country in the upcoming games in 2002.

At the time of this article, Steve sat in 14th spot overall in the league in scoring and was one of only 15 players in WHL history to score 500 or more points in his career. Below are his WHL scoring statistics.

You Said It
(Transcripts of interviews with General Managers from around the W.H.L.)

This week we talked with Chris Kubinec from the Oakville Bulls

We are talking to Chris Kubinec of the Oakville Bulls this week. Chris holds the distinction of being the only GM to win the Executive Trophy in his first year in the league. The trophy was almost guaranteed to go to the Mississauga Icedogs until they moved their talent for youth and picks prior to the trade deadline. The next most active GM was next in line as Chris was known for his deals. More than one player mentioned that when they heard they were going to Oakville they waited a day before making travel arrangements, knowing quite well that they were likely being traded again.

The Bulls currently are battling for the lead in their division and conference. They trail the Toronto Stallions by six points but would likely be closer, if not leading, if it weren't for all the injuries they have sustained. They are the second hardest hit team behind only the Saskatoon Enforcers in injuries this year, having lost 37 Man-games in the first 31 games of the season. Making the situation worse is the fact the injuries are to top players like Elias, Arvedson and Bell, Mark Bell has been injured twice for a total of 15 games himself.

The Bulls have some lofty goals for this season. They intend to compete for the conference title and/or the Presidents Cup. Never shy to making deals, Chris has already been involved in 20 of the 97 deals made so far this season. So without further discussion, here is the interview:

YSI: "Welcome Chris, let's get right to it. Tell us about your teams injury problem. Fifty man games lost so far, that is as many as all three of the teams you are chasing in your conference - Oceanics, Stallions and Sparrows - how can you continue to compete with these injuries?"

Chris: "Thanks for having me on the show. The amount of injuries that we (Bulls) have encountered so far this season has been ridiculous. The media always seem to be asking me why the Bulls are having such bad luck with the health of their players this year, and I really have no definitive answer for them; I am as puzzled as the rest of you are. The reason that the Bulls are still amongst the league leaders and competing at a high level is a result from a combination of things, two of which are depth and players stepping up. The depth I've assembled on our team is not just average; many of the players that I have brought in were brought in for this exact reason and they know what is expected of them. When the 'injury bug' strikes, both myself and coach Jacques Martin expect the rest of the pro team to step up the level of their play, and for the most part this has been done consistently throughout the season, and as a result has kept us within reach of the division leading Stallions."

YSI: "Your offense is nearly unquestionable, third highest in the league. If there is any question with your club, it would have to be defense. Hackett has been average so far, is that because the forwards are missing there defensive coverage? Or is Hackett hurting?"

Chris: "During the off-season Jacques (Martin), The Rock, and I all sat down and discussed just what we felt would be best for the Bulls to focus on if we intended to challenge the league leaders in the standings this year. The answer we came up with was that scoring was our team's best weapon, and that this would be the answer we were looking for. So Jacques revamped his game strategies and made sure that they all focused on scoring more, and so far this season it looks as though everything has worked. I must admit that our 'run-and-gun' style has cost us a few games this year, and the defensive coverage may have to be improved more once playoffs start approaching. As for Hack'(Jeff Hackett) he had surgery over the summer on his knee and has rebounded very nicely. He's looked great as far as we're concerned, and he's been in the top five in wins all year. Hack's goals against and save percentage are a little lower than expected, but that is to be expected with the offensive system we have in place currently."

YSI: "Penalty Killing, so far, has been your Achilles Heel. Ranked 16th in the league with a dismal 78.9%. Your club does have 4 short-handed goals and the league average is 3. Is it due to the forwards being so focused on scoring that the Penalty Killing number is so low?"

Chris: "Penalty killing has been our 'achilles heel' as you say, and there really are no excuses for why we are not in the top ten in penalty killing. The Bulls have been hovering around the eigth most penalized team in the league this season, and this is a dramatic change from last year as the Bulls were always ranked as one of the teams who were least penalized. With all of the trades so far this season we still have to make some fine adjustments, and the first area our focus will go to will be penalty killing and defensive zone coverage."

YSI: "During your 10-3 win over Montreal a week ago, Alexei Zhamnov became just the 4th player in WHL history to surpass the 600 point mark by scoring 5 points that game giving him 601. An amazing feat, he seems to be the engine that drives the Bulls, is there an effort being made to find a reliable second line center to relieve some of the pressure on him?"

Chris: "That was quite a game I must say. Zhamnov blew that game wide open, and some of his linemates like Elias, Amonte, and Gonchar (6 pts) that night loved every minute of it. That game marked the Bulls season high in goals scored in a game so far this season as well. There is no question that Zhamnov was the best acquisition we have made this year, and he has been our most valuable asset thus far. As for whether or not there has been any effort to obtain another centre to back him up, lets just say that we feel we have dramatically upgraded our center ice position in the last week with the acquisitions of Kirk Muller, Ray Ferraro and of course Stephane Yelle."

YSI: "Mario Lemieux. One of the greatest players of all time and holder of the second highest points-per-game average in the league. He was your coach then he resigned to announce his comeback. Subsequently drafted by the Waterloo Lunatics and just recently traded to the black hole that is the New England Dropkicks. Was there any effort on your part to acquire him?"

Chris: "Mario is a great friend of mine and I was sad to learn that he was leaving the Bulls, but I must say that the fan in me wanted to see him back on the ice where he belongs. Personally, I've watched him play for many years and I can say that he's probably my favourite hockey player of all-time. The guy is amazing. Now that he is no longer with the Lunatics I can address the issue of the Bulls trying to acquire him. The day after the Lunatics selected Mario Lemieux from the special free-agent draft, I was already on the phone talking trade with them. For the last four months I have been negotiating with Jason Stumpf (Lunatics GM), and believe me it has been very frustrating and tiring. Then Monday December 10th, 2001 came and a 'deal' finally had been reached between the two clubs that would have brought back Mario to Oakville.

*You look confused bro?, can we get some water in here please*

Let me explain. The block buster deal that had been reached between the Bulls and Lunatics would, indeed, have brought Mario back to Oakville, but at a very steep price. Players such as Ozolinsh, Bonk, and Bell (just to name a few) would have been packing their bags if I didn't step back in and say something. I told Jason firstly, that seeing how I was only acquiring one real player with skill, and he was acquiring more than three (therefore making the deal very lop-sided) that I simply could no longer do the deal after reviewing it over and over throughout the day. Secondly, if for some reason the deal was not vetoed in some miracle, it would have hurt my team's overall talent, and we need our talented depth if we are going to try and run down the Stallions.

During the conversation I had with Mario, he completely understood my decision to turn down the deal that was lingering, that would have brought him back to Oakville. He is a very reasonable man, and knew that the deal would not help the Bulls' overall plans this year to compete for the cup. So with that said, the Lunatics than confirmed the Dropkicks large offer of three bona fide players for one (Mario). The Lunatics came away big-time winners in that deal easily acquiring Weight, Hlavac and Modin, and their club will benefit on the ice this year and next year from it.
"

YSI: "Ok, take a breath now and relax. We have a caller from Boston. Go ahead caller."

Caller: "Are there any plans to continue pursuing Mario from Boston?"

Chris: "That voice sounds awfully familiar...(*smirk*). To be quite honest the Bulls are no longer actively pursuing Mario. Of course I will always be listening to offers, and possibly getting on the phone here and there, but as for concrete offers... well, I don't see that occuring this season now as we are fairly happy with the depth we've added this season at center."

YSI: "You started out on fire, but seem to have stumbled, do you see any cause for concern?"

Chris: "(*LOL*) Stumble?!... The Bulls have been one of the WHL's best teams this season, and if not for the Stallions recent 15+ game unbeaten streak, which has made it difficult to gain any ground in the standings, the Bulls would be much closer to leading the Wales Conference. The Bulls are a very strong team right now, and have battled through adversity all season long. So, no there is absolutely no cause for concern."

YSI: "You and Toronto seem to be matching each other trade for trade. Is there a concerted effort on your part to keep pace with their moves?"

Chris: "Absolutely not. If anything, it is quite the opposite. Over the course of this season Oakville has made twenty-four different deals, while Toronto has made a mere nine in total I believe. With such an enormous difference it is hard to make such an assumption, if anything Toronto is now trying to match Oakville in the trade department."

YSI: "Clearly the Wales is the more competitive conference this year. How do you see the conference shaping up? Where do you see yourself in the end?"

Chris: "This year's playoff race is going to be one of the best in WHL history. There is so much talent out there this year that a lot of teams have a high potential of playing the role of the 'upsetter'. I think the Wales Conference in the end will finish as follows: Stallions(Division Leader and Conference Champion), Oceanics(Division leader), Bulls, Sparrows, Corinthians, Enforcers, Vipers, and the last spot will probably be a battle between the improved Lunatics and the Juggernaughts. I'm giving the Luns the edge there. Also I think the Enforcers may surprise some critics too. In the end, I can see the Bulls bringing the cup home to Oakville. The reason being is that we always have an ace up our sleeve when it comes to making the key trades, and impact plays."

YSI: "How about the Campbell conference? How do you see them finishing? And what do you think about the Dropkick's poor record to date?"

Chris: "The Campbell Conference, in the end, will finish as follows: Voodoo(Division Leader and Conference Champion), Krushers(Division Leader), Express Vikings, Dropkicks, Saints, Dominators, and Endless. I really like the Express' chances of capturing the Conference title, however, I'm still giving the Voodoo the edge even though I think the Express will represent the Campbell Conference in this year's finals. The Krushers have over-achieved all season long, and have gained ground on their entire division. This team really does not have a lot of weapons to throw at you when it comes to the playoffs at this point, so I do not like their chances after round one at all. I really think the Dropkicks will come around, and who knows, maybe they will put together a little run and battle the Krushers for the division lead before playoffs arrive. There is simply too much potential and talent on that team for it to be performing so poorly. With Mario, they get an instant scorer and leader, and with Kordy in the office, they have all of the tools in place to succeed in the second half of the season."

YSI: "Now, as usual I like to give the guest the opportunity to end the program, so you have the floor."

Chris: "As usual I had a great time talking with 'You Said It', and seeing how I'm here right now I'll let you guys have the honour of breaking the news that after the Bulls big 6-1 victory over the Vikings, Sandis Ozolinsh decided to give up his captaincy to centre Alexei Zhamnov. This was really a class act by Ozo, who felt that Alexei deserved it after everything he has done for the Bulls this season.

The Oakville Bulls are beginning to gain respect not just on the ice this season, but also as an organization. You don't necessarily have to like the Bulls, but as long as we continue to make it difficult for other teams in the league to win games, than everyone on this team is doing what they should be, and this will help us in the standings. When I took over this franchise in the middle of season five, the team looked like it couldn't even beat over half of the WFHL teams as there best player was Daymond Langkow who hadn't even reached his full potential yet. After what seems like hundreds of deals, my staff and I have rebuilt this team into a winner and we are now proud to say that 'we' all built this team. It's a good feeling to be able to truthfully say that a team is 'your' team. And that is why I am so proud of this franchise, because we've basically rebuilt every aspect of the team, and from there that's where you cross your fingers and wait for the magic to happen. I'm very proud of this franchise, especially as they've battled so much adversity this season.
"

Note: The caller questions raised during the interview were actual questions from league participants. I would like some questions sent to me as soon as possible for my next interview. YSI will be interviewing Chris Kordyback of the New England Dropkicks, so send your questions to YSI.

Team Canada Update

Toronto, Canada - The Canadian team is shaping up. The two general managers recently swapped lists of possible candidates and although there is said to be some confusion regarding the remain two Centers that are to be named, the remainder of the roster seemed to fall into place nicely. The exact nature of the confusion is not known, but it is believed that whatever is holding up the naming of the full roster will be quickly overcome and that the roster will be named by the January 15th deadline.

So far the newly named players are of little surprise. Joining Owen Nolan and Theo Fleury on Right Wing will be Jarome Iginla, Mark Recchi and Anson Carter. The Left side will be patrolled by Paul Kariya and Brendan Shanahan and joining them will be Geoff Sanderson and Ryan Smyth.

The defence was a little tougher, but because there is so much talent to choose from. So joining the initial four of Pronger, Blake, Jovanovski and MacInnis will be Wade Redden, Steve Duchesne, Scott Niedermayer and Eric Desjardins. Finally, Patrick Roy was named as the third goalie.

Team Sweden Update

Stockholm, Sweden - The Swedish people's expectations on the Swedish Olympic team continue to grow as many of the Swedish players continue to play well in the WHL. Three of the fourteen top scorers in the league are from Sweden. The scoring table is as usual dominated by Canadian players and Canada must be held favorites in the Olympic tournament. Team Sweden may not have the depth that teams like Canada and USA but that doesn't mean that they can't win the gold.

If Sweden want to win they got to make sure that our stars, Sundin, Forsberg, Naslund and Lidstrom are playing the best hockey of their career. We've earlier this season seen that Mats Sundin can singlehandedly win games for his team as he scored SEVEN goals in Corinthians 10-4 win against the Krushers. It is also important that all of team Sweden's Voodoo players are playing well. Mr Kinnaird, who will coach the Swedes in the Olympics, has a lot of experience from Swedish players from the Vancouver Voodoo. His "quarrel" with the Sedin Twins before Christmas wasn't good for the team but we hope that it won't effect the teams performance in the Olympics.

The Goalies are something of a weak spot for team Sweden. Tommy Salo and the others are good goalkeepers but they have never received the proper acknowledgement in the WHL that they deserve. We are hoping for Salo to prove in the Olympics that he is a top notch goalie. If he doesn't Sweden will have to score a lot in order to win their games.

For Team Sweden, this is Lasse Kinch

Team Czech Republic Update

Prague, Czech Republic - The last couple of weeks has been crazy for goaltender Roman Turek, but after his WHL General Manager Magnus Nilsson, of the Juggernaughts, requested that Turek only be allowed to play for team Czechia and no others, his final destination was known.

Czech Republic GM Chris Kubinec had originally granted Roman Turek a release from team Czechia, after originally being named as one of the three goalies, at the request from team Germany who was in need of another goalie. In the end Turek's WHL team the Juggernaughts, requested that he not be permitted to attend the team Germany camp, and hours after that statement was made GM Kubinec welcomed back Turek with open arms to team Czech Republic where he rightfully belongs.

In other news, newly named assistant coach Josef Augusta and head coach Slavomir Lener have completed all of there game strategies for this year's Olympics, and are eager to get the games started.
