Rumours Surround Toronto As Winning Continues
Toronto, ON - The Stallions continue to win as they beat Hamilton last night for their 37th win of the season. Toronto won the game 4-2 on goals by Shayne Corson, Miroslav Satan and two from Eric Lindros including the game winner. The game was a see-saw battle through the first two periods, with Hamilton opening the scoring and Toronto tying it up within 21 seconds. Toronto took the lead in the second only to have Hamilton make it even 9 minutes later. The third period belonged to the Stallions though as they hammered 24 shots on Roberto Luongo, who admirably withstood a 47 shot barrage on the night. He couldn't, however, stop two shots 13 seconds apart. One from Lindros and the other from Corson, both finding the back of the net. Although not named a star, Luongo sure played like one.
If the Toronto players seemed distracted through the first two periods last night, who could blame them? An amazing leak out of Des Moines has Toronto seeking Steve Yzerman. The rumours were quickly denied by general manager Brian Howe in a statement:
Howe: "Rumours have been swirling around this team for months now, this is just another one. While we would immediately welcome the addition of a player of Steve's status, we can say that we are not actively seeking him. His performance this year has been remarkable and he would be a great addition to this or any roster, but we simply don't have what it takes to get him. Our team is old enough as it is, adding Steve at 38 years of age would only add to an already burgeoning problem. The guys from our team that it would take to acquire a Steve Yzerman are all relatively young and basically untouchable."
Clearly trying to defuse any possible trade leaks or just trying to keep the rumours from affecting his team's performance, but the reasoning is sound. To add Steve Yzerman would take a substantial deal, one that wouldn't make sense from Toronto's standpoint. Moving anyone to gain a 38 year old player, regardless of his ability, would weaken this teams future. A future that is already threadbare. Figuring it would probably take either Lindros or Sakic to get Yzerman otherwise Toronto would be playing Steve on the third line.

Voodoo On A Roll
Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Voodoo continue to roll along, although so far this season there have been more bumps in the road than usual. After a fantastic start to the season, the Voodoo have been unable to put ground between themselves and the Rocky Mountain Express. Currently the two rivals are tied with 68 points although the Voodoo have one more win.
"We have not played our best at times this season. One game we will be up for it, and beat the Stallions. Next we'll lose to a team we should beat," said captain Mike Peca, " It has been frustrating."
Vancouver faces the Oceanics next, a team that has struggled of late, going 4 and 6 in their last ten. "They are a dangerous team. They showed that earlier in the season. We have to make sure our guys are ready for this challenge. I think some of our guys are looking forward to the Olympics, and hopefully when that's done, our guys can re-focus on hitting their stride for the playoffs." said Randy Ladouceur.
Vikings Coach On Thin Ice
Edmonton, AB - Head coach Rob Ziccarelli is reportedly on thin ice after the club's latest slide which has them tied for the final playoff spot in the Campbell Conference. Ziccarelli seems over-matched on most nights and has failed miserably in his attempt to put together even mediocre special teams. It is believed that GM Lee McEwen has already decided to replace Ziccarelli but would like to wait until the summer. However if the teams falls any further out of a playoff spot it is unlikely that "Ziccer" will be able to hold onto his job until the off-season.
Right-winger Dan Cleary has been a lone bright spot since making his WHL debut back in November. Cleary has 35 points in 32 games but is ineligible for the Calder Trophy because he was drafted in the WHL3 Entry Draft. If he was considered a rookie, Cleary would be a front-runner for the award.
The team has agreed to investigate the possibility of trading defenceman Scott Stevens. Stevens would like to play for a contender if at all possible. The team is also checking on the interest in team captain Rod Brind'Amour.
Backup goaltender Garth Snow has continued to struggle and there is no doubt McEwen is still trying to acquire another goalie.

Bears Hit Skids
Harrisburg, PA - The bears have had some serious problems over the last month. It started with the trading of veterans Stu Barnes and Viktor Kozlov. Now the youngsters in this team have been struggling at best to make the playoffs. But this team is built towards the future. These youngsters are getting valuable experience. It is rumored that Ari Ahonen may get a call up to the pros to do some work with the big team..... Sean Burke, Mike Grier and Adam Graves have asked to be traded to a contender where they can show their worth.
Playoff Dreams In Boston
Boston, MA - The Boston Hawks are still dreaming of the playoffs. Thirty games into the season it looked like the team would actually make it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Hawks/Agents organization is the only one in the WHL that has never appeared in post season play.
So between game 30 and 39 came a 10 game losing streak that put the Hawks into 10th place in the conference. This was just before the WHL Christmas break and the Hawks management didn't waste any time. After the break significant changes had been made to the roster and the Hawks started to win again.
During the last 10 games the Hawks have climbed up into 8th place in the Campbell conference. The 6-4-0 record this past month the best so far this season for the Hawks. The first 10 games of the season ended also with a 6-4-0 record.
Michael Nylander and Steve Heinze are the two who have made the biggest impact on the Hawks since arriving here during the Christmas break. This month both have played very well and only moments ago, it was announced that Michael Nylander has been selected player of the month by the fans.
Here are the top five Hawks players this month.
1. F 92 Mikael Nylander 10 8 7 15 1 7 0 3 0 28 6 28.6
Oh! What a player. Nylander has been a real sniper on the powerplay. Seven of his 8 goals this month have been on the powerplay. Three of them game winners. Nylander has already started to prove that he is the player to lead the team towards the playoffs.
2. F 26 Steve Heinze 10 6 9 15 1 1 0 0 0 35 22 17.1
Brought back from the Toronto Stallions in the deal that saw Shayne Corson leave the Hawks. Steve has been playing on the same line as Nylander. The two complement each other very well.
3. D 34 Marcus Ragnarsson 10 3 9 12 1 2 0 0 0 8 16 37.5
Ragnarsson is perhaps the player that has surprised the Hawks management the most this season. He has been playing good solid hockey all season. He plays on the second line together with the players above. The three have scored no less than 10 powerplay goals in the last 10 games.
4. F 94 Sergei Berezin 10 7 5 12 3 4 0 0 0 44 2 15.9
Berezin leads the team in goals with 32. That puts him tied for 8th place in the league. There have been rumors going around saying that Berezin might be traded to a contending team if it turns out that the Hawks can't reach the playoffs.
5. D 37 Robert Svehla 10 4 5 9 4 0 0 1 0 8 12 50.0
Robert Svehla is part of the Hawks first defensive pairing. He and Sergei Zubov are both on the scoring table for defencmen. Svehla has been on the trading block for about a month now but the Hawks have not received an offer they feel they can accept at this point.
The Campbell conference is very close, at least around 8th place. Just take a look at this:

New England Troubles Continue
Hartford, MA - What looked like the beginnings of a strong rally by the Dropkicks has turned into what now looks like the beginning of another slump.
Sure, nagging injuries to important players like Mario Lemieux, Derian Hatcher and Tom Poti haven't helped. But uninspired back to back losses to the Saints (another team vying for a playoff spot) and the Krushers (yes, the bitter rival Krushers, who have owned the 'Kicks in each of the three games so far this season)have made the Dropkicks suspects in the Steve Yzerman sweepstakes.
Hmmm. Acquiring Yzerman would involve jettisoning younger talent for an old guy who could leave the team in under a year.
Sound familiar?
It is foolish think GM Chris Kordyback (who is a poor man's Jon Lemoine) would not put in a pitch for a deal, the Dropkicks have been there and done that with the Mario Lemieux trade. And that was done only after management made a backroom deal to secure The Magnificent One's services through WHL 8.
All that aside, the real reason that Stevie Y won't don a Dropkicks uniform is that the Dominators don't like what Kordyback is offering.
The rumour mill says Kordyback offered Viktor Kozlov and Shawn Horcoff for Yzerman straight up.
Doms GM Andreas Larsson appears to have another suitor with more to offer than a 27 year old above-average forward who can play any position plus a young, talented center that could be a second liner in a few years.
Either that or he is betting that he can sign Yzerman despite the fact that the talented old center has insisted the possibility of that is,according to him, "less than 50/50". You figure it out.
All of this should be no concern to the Lemieuxs, Thorntons and Bures of the world. Their job is to score goals and try on occasion to stop the opposing team from peppering their goalie with shots.
This scribe's advice? Take a page out of the Endless or the Saint's book. Don't expect re-enforcements every time you lose a few games. Just show up to the rink with the guys who you practice with, shut up and play hockey.

Random Kicks - The Dropkicks blow. That's all for now.
Islanders Hurting
Victoria, B.C. - Not the best of weeks for the Victoria Islanders who are struggling with 2 wins over the last 10 games and currently sitting with a 5 game loosing streak. The Isles have decent second and third line players but have been hit hard with injuries. There is optimism once Linden and the newly acquired Todd Marchant are healthy, this team will push hard for one of the final playoff spots.

Oakville Bulls Make Big Acquisitions
Oakville, ON - All of a sudden the flood gates opened this week, and the Oakville Bulls were in trade talks with over six different teams. So far this week has seen the Oakville Bulls confirm three deals.
The first was a deal with the Endless and it saw PJ Axelsson, Henrik Tallinder, and Joe Reekie come to Oakville in exchange for Jaroslav Spacek, Denny Lambert, and a 2nd rounder(WHL9). The second deal saw Adam Mair, Andrew Brunette (look out for him next season), and a 3rd rounder (WHL8) go to the Mississauga Icedogs in exchange for former Bulls Darby Hendrickson and Radek Dvorak. The third deal was where things started to make more of an impact. The Oakville Bulls sent Stephane Yelle, Lubomir Sekeras, and just acquired PJ Axelsson and Joe Reekie to the Pittsburgh Endless. Coming to Oakville are Peter Ratchuk, Bryan Berard, Ulf Dahlen, Jason Morgan, and a 4th rounder (WHL8). This deal solidify's the Bulls defense core very nicely.
Oakville Bulls GM Chris Kubinec comments on the recent trade action:
"Expect the unexpected when your talking about the Oakville Bulls organization. We make deals sometimes that are only made because they are part of a process of making even bigger deals. We're very innovative. I think that Ratchuk's improved play this season, along with Berard's offensive capabilities, will definitely help us in our quest for the cup."
Daily Bullz-Eye
Only eight more games until the Bulls host the Express.... Rumors have it that some lady escorts will be on the arms of GM Pongratz when he and GM Kubinec watch the game together... More as it happens....
Apparently relatives of Bulls GM Chris Kubinec are all preparing early to place their bets on the Bulls winning the Cyber Cup this season.... what information do they know that we don't?
Corinths GM Marc Hebert and winger Brian Savage were heard screaming at each other minutes before a lot of noise was heard from Hebert's office. Seconds after the noise diminished Savage was seen walking out of the office with a bloody nose... looks like their could be trouble in Quebec City paradise.
In a somewhat hilarious fashion, Dominators GM Andreas Larsson appeared for the tapping's of "Fear Factor" last week. From what we hear, after Andreas won his first event, he started trash talking all the other contestants, and as he gave all of them the 'stare of death' he told them all that he was 'the game' and if anybody wanted to try and play 'the game' their game would be over. Didn't know how serious Andreas was about winning on this show. :)
I'm Michael Landsberg reporting.
'And that's the bottom line!...here in Oakville, Ontario!'.
Dominators Pick It Up Despite Rumours
Des Moines, IA - The Des Moines Dominators continue to play well and during the last ten games the DMD have an 8-2-0 record. The Dominators are playing almost .600 hockey and if they continue like this, it will be the best ever Dominators regular season. New GM Larsson has stated from day one that he believes in the Des Moines squad and that no big changes will be needed. Larsson has kept his word and has still not traded a single player on pro team.
Well, what is different then in Des Moines this season? The big difference is the coaching of the team. The Larsson coaching staff lead by Kent Nilsson is doing fantastic work with the Dominators. They are currently getting the best out of every player on the team.
We could also report that winger Rico Fata, a WHL4 first rounder, has played very well in the past games. Something that isn't a surprise to the DMD staff as assistant coach, Neal Broten, has reported that the young winger has really showed on the last 3 weeks practices that he wants regular shifts with the DMD.
The farm system has talented swedish winger, Marcus Nilsson, developing in the right direction. Farm team coach, Basil McRae, stated that Nilsson is ready for the WHL. "I have told Larsson that Nilsson is ready for the big league. I think Nilsson will leave here before the season ends" said McRae.
But everything isn't nice and peaceful in Des Moines as the Larsson conservative trade policy could be over. The Steve Yzerman trade rumours are still flying around and that is something that really bothers and upset the DMD fans that made a loud protest at the last home game. The fanatic Des Moines crowd made it very obvious that they'll not accept any Yzerman deal. A group of fans actually stayed five and half hours inside the Coca Cola Dominator Arena with a request to talk to the general manager, Andreas Larsson, about the Yzerman situation. The Dominators GM, Andreas Larsson, refused to meet the upset fans. Larsson said that he will comment on the matter after the weekend. That will be the first time the GM speaks about the DMD captain and his future with the team.
(Taking a biographical and statistical look at superstars of today and tomorrow)
This month we look at Mike Modano from the Seattle Saints
NHL History:
Mike Modano was drafted first overall in the 1988 Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. At the end of that season, he played his first two games at the NHL level in the playoffs. In 1989-90, Mike joined the North Stars from the start of the season and scored a goal in his first game (October 5 against the Islanders). That year, he scored 29 goals and 75 points, was an All-Rookie Team forward and was the runner-up to the Calder Trophy. He also won both the North Stars' Rookie of the Year and The Hockey News' Rookie of the Year awards. In the playoffs, he scored two points in seven games. In 1990-91, Mike scored 28 goals and 64 points. In the playoffs, he helped the North Stars upset the top-seed Blackhawks in the first round and the Blues in the Norris Division finals. They then captured the Clarence Campbell Bowl with a 4-1 series victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Oilers before losing the Penguins in the Stanley Cup finals. In game four against the Oilers (May 8), Mike scored the game-winning goal. In 23 post-season games, he totalled 20 points.
In 1991-92, Mike paced the North Stars with 77 points and won the team's Masterton Award as MVP. He also won the North Stars' Star of the Game award and led the team with eight game-winning goals and 256 shots on net. In the playoffs, Mike scored five points in seven games. The following season, Mike led the Stars with 60 assists and 93 points as the North Stars missed the playoffs despite improving 12 points in the standings. During the season, Mike played in his first All-Star Game and won his first Player of the Week honour (February 8). For the second straight year, Mike led the team in game-winning goals (seven) and shots (307) and won the North Stars' Masterton Award as team MVP.
In 1993-94, Mike moved with the franchise to Dallas (now the Stars) and led the team back into the playoffs with a franchise record 42 wins and 97 points. For the third straight season, Mike won the Stars' Masterton Award and paced the team in points (93) and shots (281). He also led his team in goals (50) and power-play goals (18) for the first time. In the playoffs, Mike led the Stars to the second round with seven goals and ten points in just nine games. At year's end, Mike ranked 16th on The Hockey News' Top-40 list. In the shortened 1994-95 season, Mike scored 29 points in 30 games before undergoing ankle surgery on April 11 (two ruptured tendons). At year's end, he was given the Stars' Community Service Award.
In 1995-96, Mike returned healthy and won his fourth Stars' Masterton Award and second Stars' Star of the Game Award. That year, he paced the team with 36 goals, 45 assists, 81 points, four short-handed goals, four game-winning goals and 320 shots. He was selected to play in the All-Star Game, but missed the contest with a strained knee. On February 19, he co-won Player of the Week honours. After the team missed the playoffs that season, Mike led the Stars to a 38-point improvement to win the Central Division title in 1996-97 (club record 48 wins and 104 points). Mike paced the team with 35 goals, 48 assists and 83 points and won his fifth team Masterton Award and third Stars' Star of the Game Award. He also led the team with a +43 plus/minus rating (second highest in the league), nine power-play goals, five short-handed goals, nine game-winning goals and 291 shots. In March, he won NHL Player of the Month honours. In the playoffs, Mike scored four goals in seven games as the Stars lost to the Oilers.
In 1997-98, Mike helped the Stars win the Presidents' Trophy with a league-best 49 wins and 109 points. Despite being limited to 52 games, Mike won his fourth Stars' Star of the Game Award and paced his team with a +25 plus/minus rating and five short-handed goals. During the season, he won NHL Player of the Month honours (October) and played in his second mid-season All-Star Game. In the playoffs, Mike led the Stars to the Western Conference finals before losing to the Red Wings. At year's end, Mike was ranked eighth on The Hockey News' Top-50 players list.
In 1998-99, Mike won his sixth Stars' Masterton Award as the team won its second straight Presidents' Trophy with a franchise record 51 wins and 114 points. Mike led the team with 34 goals, 47 assists, 81 points, a +29 rating (tie), four game-winning goals and 224 shots. He won Player of the Week honours on December 27, played in his third mid-season All-Star in January (one goal) and won his fifth Stars' Star of the Game award at season's end. In the playoffs, Mike first led the Stars to a Clarence Campbell Bowl victory with victories over the Oilers, Blues and Avalanche. Then, in the final round, Mike led the Stars to a Stanley Cup victory in six games over the Sabres. Mike's 18 assists paced the league while his two assists in the final game helped clinched the Cup. At year's end, Mike ranked sixth on The Hockey News' Top-50 players list.
In 1999-2000, Mike led the Stars with 38 goals, 43 assists and 81 points as the team won its fourth-straight division title with more than 100 points (43 wins, 102 points). Mike played in his fourth mid-season All-Star Game, was a year-end Second Team All-Star and won his sixth Stars' Star of the Game award. On March 10 against the Islanders, Mike passed Brian Bellows (342) as the Stars' all-time leading scorer. In the playoffs, Mike paced the league with 13 assists and helped the Stars win the Clarence Campbell Bowl for the second straight year over the Avalanche. In the final round, the Stars lost in six games to the Devils. In game five of that final series (June 8), Mike scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime (1-0 win). At year's end, Mike ranked fifth on The Hockey News' Top-50 players list.
In 2000-01, Mike led the Stars to their fifth straight Division title and paced the club with 51 assists, 84 points and three short-handed goals. At the 2000 Stars' Super Skills event, Mike won the hardest-shot competition with a 103.4 mph rocket.

Mike Modano was drafted in the 3rd round (58th overall) by the Hamilton Hitmen (Now the Hamilton Steelcats) in the WHL Entry Draft. Mike was traded to the Raleigh Wolfpack (Now the Harrisburg Bears) on Feb. 10, 1996. Nearly two months later, on March 26th, 1996, he was traded to the Vancouver Drizzle (Now the Des Moines Dominators).
On Aug. 2nd, 1997 Mike was traded to the Vancouver Voodoo. Nearly a year later, on July 16th, 1998, he was traded to the Mississauga Icedogs. Before the season would start that year, he was again traded to the Hartford Dropkicks (Now the New England Dropkicks) in a three-way deal that included the Hamilton Steelcats on Oct. 21st, 1998.
Eleven months later, in yet another three-way deal that this time included the Vancouver Voodoo, Mike was traded to the Montreal Juggernaughts on Sept. 24th 1999. Two weeks later, on Oct. 6th, 1999, he was traded back to the Hartford Dropkicks. Finally, on Aug. 21st, 2000, he was traded to the Seattle Saints.
Mike Modano has appeared in three All-Star weekends, including this year. Mike represented his country, the United States, in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano and is again being asked to help lead his country in the upcoming 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
Below are his WHL scoring statistics.

We talked with Chris Kordyback from the New England Dropkicks
We are talking to Chris Kordyback of the New England Dropkicks this week. Mr. Kordyback has been in New England/Hartford for the past three and a half seasons. Until this year, he had been able to improve the club's standing in his conference. Chris took over a team that finished dead last in their conference with only 18 wins, the Fury were a pathetic club who finished 2nd last in the league.
Chris came in and immediately changed the fortunes of the franchise. He led them to 35 wins for a 3rd place finish in his division and 7th in the conference, returning the franchise to the playoffs for only the second time in their four year history. They made it to the second round before being eliminated in an Express sweep.
The next year the club finished with 48 wins for 1st place in its division and 4th in the conference. A team high 298 goals-for earning them home ice advantage in the first round. Again they win through to the second round before a Voodoo sweep sent them golfing.
That brings us to last year. Franchise records in wins(51), goals-for(372) and points(111) placed them 1st in the division and 2nd in the conference. A tremendous climb in three years that went to waste when they lost in the first round in seven games to Des Moines.
That heartbreaking loss has carried over to this year. As we sit just past the halfway mark, the Dropkicks are struggling to achieve a .500 average. They sit 4th in the division and 7th in the conference. They are the 2nd least offensive team in the conference, and currently sit two games under the elusive .500 mark. They haven't won more than four games in a row this year. And can't even play a consistent brand of hockey; one game they beat the Corinthians, and yet they'll lose to Harrisburg. They will dominate a pathetic Mississauga Icedogs team but fail to show up when Vancouver visits.
Boston fans are screaming for a team to cheer for, the Hawks are as pathetic at this point. This was supposed to be the battle of Boston, but it appears neither team wants to win. So here to defend his team is Mr. Kordyback.
YSI: "Welcome Chris, nice of you to join us. Let's not dance around this, your team is struggling big time and will be lucky to make the playoffs. What do you see as the problem?"
Chris: "Thanks for having me. While it would be foolish to deny we've struggled this year, I must start by saying we've made a lot of progress from the start of the season. I should backup a bit here. We had guys like Teemu Selanne, Ray Whitney and Alexei Zhamnov here last year and the stats don't lie. They scored a lot of points and were exciting to watch without a doubt. But it was made perfectly clear that we weren't a playoff team. The playoffs and ultimately the Cyber Cup is the only thing that matters. Was it Teemu or Alexei's fault? Obviously not exclusively but there was a lot of bad attitude going around the room in that series.
When we saw that Mike Comrie would be available in the draft we moved Teemu, later we had the opportunity to acquire Val Bure but at the expense of Zhamnov. Val was damaged goods as far as we are concerned but hindsight is 20/20. That was a terrible deal looking back but what can you do.
So then a lot of pressure was put on Dougie Weight and Pavel and the result was under-performance by Dougie and 14 games of injuries for Pavel. We picked up Joe Thornton but as everybody knows he struggled immensely early on.
We were going nowhere fast. We made the decision to acquire Mario knowing we'd lose the deal from a long term perspective but no matter what Chris Kubinec thinks we have the best player in that deal and a blue chip prospect in Jiri Fischer. Freddie Modin will never be a WHL regular so the fact is a Lemieux/Fischer for Weight/Hlavac deal isn't as bad as it looks.
So to make a long story a little shorter we have a lot of ground to make up but we're confident that we will have a much better record than just .500 when the season's over plus we'll have better performance in the playoffs. I guarantee it."
YSI: "You've managed to progressively improve the club the last three years. It must be troubling to have them slide so far back?"
Chris: "I think the measuring stick should be brought out in the playoffs. Regular season points mean nothing in my opinion. Yes you need to make the playoffs but really what counts is how many times your team's name has been engraved on the Cyber Cup. By my count teams like the Stallions, Corinthians and Bulls are no better than us. Plus you have to be patient in this business. Tell me there's a better five young guys on one team in the WHL than Joe Thornton, David Legwand, Dany Heatley, Marty Turco and Mike Comrie and I'll tell you you're full of shit. Add Mike Komisarek and Tuomo Ruutu and we don't have a lot of needs as far as the future goes. The point is we'll be a great team in a few years even if we aren't the best now."
YSI: "Um, I'd have to say the Corinthians are at least better off, they HAVE won a Cyber Cup. I mean why attack them?"
Chris: "Well I guess I should validate that by saying that they did win a Cup but they've had similar problems this year to ours in that on paper they should have been winning more than they have been. Nothing personal, I guess we want to stay relatively modern here.
That is to say that this years Corinthians are not in the same league in my opinion as the Voodoo or the Express. I mean you don't hear a lot of GM's giving props to the Islanders but that franchise won a Cyber Cup years ago too."
YSI: "So what plans do you have to right the course?"
Chris: "Well I truly have confidence in the coaching staff and the guys on the team right now which is better than I've been able to say all season. We have a good mix and a pretty good idea about who should play where. Time will tell but a bet that we'll finish below where we are is a dumb one."
YSI: "Doug Weight for Mario Lemieux. Forget the others in the deal. Doug Weight has to be a personal favourite of yours. He's been back and forth from your club a few times now. This time he's gone and you get, although arguably the best player in the world, a damaged 37 year old one. Why?"
Chris: "Dougie lacked the ability to lead this team out of the funk that they were in. Can a team with Dougie, Drury, Thornton, Bure, Hammer, Potsie etc. really be that bad? Something was missing and with all due respect to Dougie, leadership was a big part of it. But truly that’s the least of reasons why a team like ours wanted to acquire Mario even at the cost of Weighter.
Mario will turn 37 at the beginning of next season. The notion that he is in any way damaged is amusing, he’s played every game this year and other than the sore hip that we are told is a bruise he’s as healthy as anyone on our team or any other team. Where that rumour started I don’t know.
The fact is he’s one of the top three guys to ever lace up a pair of skates. Weight will play long after Mario hangs up the skates but by that time it’s a safe bet that either Joe, Mike or maybe even Legwand will be ready to be our definitive number one guy. So I guess having this depth prompted us to make this deal happen once Mario guaranteed that he would sign at least a one year contract with us. Which he did. That means Mario will wear a Dropkicks uniform until the end of next season at the very least. If Weighter outscores Mario from the time he started with us to the day Mario retires I’ll eat my hat. Until that time I’d urge critics like Kubinec to keep their useless comments to themselves.
Speaking of Kubinec, I’m curious as to how Petr Sykora is playing for him. Because Heatley and Drury are pretty popular in New England. The Bulls are playing well, hell, they’re obviously a good team but he’s won f-ck all in the grand scheme of things. Or as Coach Rettschlag would say 'He hasn’t (expletive)’d a (expletive) any more than his mother has (expletive)’d a horse’s (expletive). If you knows what I means.'"
YSI: "Ollie the goalie. The guy has talent coming out his ears, but he's struggling. With Turco clearly not ready yet and Osgood floundering in Mississauga, what are you going to do? Is Olaf hurt or just not playing focused?"
Chris: "That’s a great question. Olaf was great for us last year but you’re right when you say he’s struggled. A lot of that had to do with his competitiveness, he and Ozzie having to compete was hard on him.
When we recognized that we made the deal to get Marty and we’re very pleased with the deal we made. Turks will be a #1 guy someday but for now Ollie can rest assured that he’s our guy in big games. He has in a way through the trade been given a vote of confidence. He isn’t 100% but he’s healthy enough that we expect more vs the big shot clubs in the WHL."
YSI: "Ollie's not a 100%. Care to expand on that?"
Chris: "Well he's more or less 100%...just the regular injuries goalies have to play through year after year. I'm not giving the Krushers an area to attack Ollie if that's what you're looking for!"
YSI: "Turco has played one game for you and that was against the hapless Icedogs. Do you intend on giving him more challenging duties or is he simply there to learn from Olaf?"
Chris: "Good question. Marty will play the odd game but when a team is in our position it seems reasonable to me to have your top goalie between the pipes more times than not. Every point counts and playing Marty against the top clubs wouldn't help him or the team's record. Marty is a very positive guy and he knows this is Olaf's team right now. We're very happy that we don't have the tension that we did when Ozzie was here quite frankly."
YSI: "Ok. Now your team is lean on scoring, there are only seven teams with less goals scored. Looking at your players, your wingers are rather sparse in the goals department. Only Drury, Bure and Kozlov have double digits in goals, do you intend on trying to fix that before the playoffs begin or are you going to wait for Heatley, Myhres, Laraque and Belanger to improve?"
Chris: "Well the lack of goals is a mystery to us. I guess ideally we'd have all of our forwards on pace for 50 goals but realistically Mario is the only guy with a chance at that happening. Myhres, Georges and Kenny play a significant role on this team but I'd be lying if I told you that I expected a lot of red lights to be lit by them. Heater, Greener have contributed a fair amount given their amount of ice-time. Remember we're playing Joe at LW most nights with Mario and as a notable Eastern sports writer said, 'anybody playing along side Mario and Bure had better score'. Or something to that effect. His production points-wise has improved in the five or so games we've played him with Mario."
YSI: "Now, getting away from your team and looking at your conference. The Krushers are running away with the division this year, with a relatively sparse roster too. And the Dominators continue to chase them. Not to mention the perennial challengers Voodoo and Express. How do you see the conference finishing up?"
Chris: "Well I'm going out on a limb here to say that the Voodoo will probably finish first. The Krushers will finish just ahead of us for the second seed thanks to the divisional 1st place finish. Then the Express, Dropkicks, Doms, Vikes, Endless and Saints will be the rest of the story. Our conference will come back to reality."
YSI: "And what about the Wales? Some surprises; Oceanics vault from bottom to near top, Corinthians early struggles and recent improvement, Sparrows leading their division, Stallions extremely lucky run. How do you see that division ending up?"
Chris: "Hate to say it but here goes. Got your pen? Stallions, Sparrows (1st in Div), Bulls, Corinths, Oceanics, Vipers, Enforcers and the Lunatics will sneak in th back door. That is unless some team sand bags it to try to compete for the #1 or more realistically for the #2 pick in the draft like last season. Everyone knows that happened last year unfortunately."
YSI: "Speaking of the two conferences. The All-Star game again turned into a bitchfest. Through it all the Voodoo were, again, the targets of most of the abuse. But you came out in defence of them? Why?"
Chris: "Let me clarify something...I agree that Darren selected too many Voodoo players. But the yapping and bitching that followed from the Strickens, Golbezs and even the Lemoines and Jason Stumpfs was (expletive) annoying. I mean really. It's the (expletive) all star game. Mario and Hamr represented the 'Kicks...and even though I thought Pavel and Potsie should have gone that was Kinnaird's decision. If I was ever to select the team again, as I did last year, I'd pick more evenly, yes. But the time and effort wasted on nitpicking was ludicrous. Though it should be mentioned that in speaking to (WHL Commissioner) Mike (Hebert) he made a good point...'At least people are paying attention to the all-star game'...and they obviously were. I still like the fact that we won last year when Lee and I picked the team."
YSI: "Ok, we have a caller. This is Dave from Oakville, go ahead Dave."
Caller: "Yeah, uh, how did, uh, Mike Comrie react when he, uh, found out that the Dropkicks re-acquired, uh, David Legwand?"
Chris: "Is this Dave Duncan? Anyway Mike reacted the way we expected him to react..by welcoming David back on to the team that he feels at home on. Both Mike and David are a big part of the future of the Dropkicks. The original trade that sent David to Mississauga felt like a mistake, and we've played really well since having him back. I know this...Mike is a competitive guy and if he views David as competition then we can look at that as a motivator. But there was no jealousy or ill will as far as anyone's told me."
YSI: "Excellent. You do have a great core of young talent in New England. If they all develop as you expect, you will be able to finish a strong third or fourth every year. But how do you go about competing against powerhouses like the Voodoo or the Express?"
Chris: "I think if these guys develop as I think they will they'll become every bit as good as the Kariya's, Forsberg's etc. Eventually the Voodoo and the Express to a lesser extent will have to make changes to the core of their team. Both of those GM's have done a great job of building winning teams year after year. I think Kris bringing in Klesla as a future number one defenceman was a great move, but I wouldn't say that either of the Express or the Voodoo have the organizational depth that we do with M.C., Dany, Joe, David, Jiri (Fischer) Tuomo (Ruutu) and Komo (bruising defenceman Mike Komisarek). Who do the Voodoo have from the past few drafts? Harold Druken? Kris has guys like Hamhuis, Spezza, Brendl and Hemsky who will lead them in the future but I'll take our young gys over his.
Bottom line is I don't see us finishing ahead of them or even the Krushers this year because of our terrible start this season. But as I mentioned earlier today all that matters is that we make progress in the playoffs to the point where we win the big prize."
YSI: "Yes, I suppose it would be nice to get past the second round for a change, wouldn't it?"
Chris: "Well I suppose it would...we wouldn't know for sure but if it's anything like getting past the second round of the playoffs with Al Stricken's wife (if you knows what I means) we're hoping that everything comes together this spring. But seriously, I'm not sure if anyone expects us to win one series this year. We'll have to see, I think we have a team that can win four out of seven against a lot of teams if we're healthy."
YSI: "Adam Rettschlag. Not everybody's first choice for a coach. While he certainly does have the team playing well, is it not true that he is alienating some of his players with his brash approach?"
Chris: "Well you've figured out why we made a flurry of trades here a few months back. Hlavac, Dvorak, Torres and yes even Weight had a tough time with his style of coaching. Adam really challenges the players but all you have to do is look at the way the team has played to know that the team and his system is starting to work. The powerplay has started to click and the team is playing more aggressively. Make no mistake Adam has had to calm down a bit, we can't trade everybody he offends or we'll have guys like Myhres and Belanger left and that's it. So he's pared things back a bit for the better. But he still swears like a sailor and goes to the horse track every Sunday...that can't change or we'll have an ineffective Adam Rettschlag."
YSI: "Fans in Toronto know Roman Hamrlik intimately, with his having played here for five years. As he did in Toronto, he leads your defence in points. The only knock against him was his weak play in his own end, has pairing him up with Tom Poti improved either defenceman's game?"
Chris: "Well that move was done to make both guys more responsible in their own end. It would be easy to stick either of them with Hatch and say 'Go for a skate' but making them both accountable defensively will ultimately make them more complete players. Pairings aren't set in stone though. Potsie currently has a sore thumb so he'll play less over the next little while.
We've had a lot of luck with defencemen coming up from Worcester...remember we traded Kyle McLaren to get the #2 pick and we were worried about our ability to hit and be aggressive. Well Dan Bodson, the Pietasters coach has been a miracle worker in our minds. We've called up Hulse and (Kevin) Dean and last night I got a surprise call form Dan that nearly knocked me off my feet. another defenceman is, according to him, ready for the WHL. Expect to see Mike Komisarek in the Dropkicks line-up any day now."
YSI: "As always, I'd like to thank Chris Kordyback for joining me today and wish him success the for the remainder of the season. Now we open the floor to him for the closing comments. It's all yours Chris."
Chris: "Again thanks for having me on to rant. This has been and will continue to be a challenging year, but we think we have the right tools to compete for a decent playoff seed and we'll see what happens in the playoffs. Remember, this year isn't everything. We'll be a good team for a lot of years.
One other thing...I'd like people to stop for a minute and think about how much they love hockey, especially you Canadians out there, and think about how much YOU WILL CRY WHEN THE SOVIET RED ARMY CONQUERS YOUR WEAK NATION'S PATHETIC HOWE AND MCEWEN LED TEAM! WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS!!
Thanks again, stay for the buffet... it's fabulous."
Note: The caller questions raised during the interview were actual questions from league participants. I would like some questions sent to me as soon as possible for my next interview. YSI will be interviewing Chris Kordyback of the New England Dropkicks, so send your questions to YSI.

(Updates on the Olympic games in Salt Lake City 2002)
Team Canada Update
Toronto, Canada - The Canadian team has been finalized, and the players are set. At press time, none of Canada's representatives were listed on their teams injury lists. Canada's players are all playing well, as seven of the top fifteen forwards in the league are on the Canadian Roster. Six of the top fifteen defencemen are Canadian Olympians also. Two of Canada's three goalies are tops in the G.A.A. and Win-Loss-Tie categories and are listed second and third in the save percentage category.
The rosters are now being placed in to the hands of head coaches Mike Hebert and Larry Berteotti. The two will be entrusted to bring the gold back to Canada. We asked the two GM's, Lee McEwen and Brian Howe, about the anxiety of picking the team and turning it over to the coaches to either win or lose it;
Brian Howe: "It's hard. You pour over a group of players and create a roster and you instinctively want to carry through and continue coaching. But for myself, my coaching experience was a disaster in Toronto. I was only saved by Darryl Sittler who took over and transformed a losing team into a winning one. So turning it over to Mike and Larry is not a problem for me. Both are competent coaches and will do a great job. I look forward to seeing how they play the guys Lee and I have given them."
Lee McEwen: "When you are asked to be a part of a project like this, you almost immediately feel the pressure. It seems like every single Canadian citizen has ideas on who should play, who they should play with, who should be the goalies, who doesn't deserve to be there, and so on. I want to say that no stone went unturned in our quest to ice what we feel is the best Canadian hockey team possible. The support staff at the Canadian Hockey Association was absolutely incredible in the help they lent Brian and I and I think it is important that they are recognized for their contributions. The pressure that I think we feel is the good kind of pressure, the kind of pressure that pushes an individual to do their absolute best and that is what we have done. Brian and I did this job to the best of our abilities and are very confident in this coaching staff and in these players in their ability to bring back the Gold Medal."

Team Sweden Update
Stockholm, Sweden - With the Olympics less than two weeks away people here in Sweden start to prepare themselves. We can report a shortage of big screen TVs and we expect to see an increasing number of people staying home and calling in sick.
Lets take a look at how some of the Swedish players are doing in the WHL. As expected it is Markus Näslund and Peter Forsberg that have the most points of the Swedish players. The two Voodoo players are 8th and 9th in league scoring. Nicklas Lidström leads the leagues defenders in scoring with 53 points. Centerman Michael Nylander has improved his game a lot since his move to the Boston Hawks. The question is if that is enough to get a place among the top 9 forwards. Renberg is also playing well on the Enforcers and let us not forget Mats Sundin. Mats scored 7 goals in a game against the Krushers earlier this season and we are still seeing re-runs of that game here in Sweden.
The head of the Swedish hockey federation leaves for Salt Lake City along with team doctors and other staff members later this week. The players will then join the squad a couple of days before the tournament begins. There wont be much time for the team to practice together before the first game.
