Victoria Enjoy Playoff Spot

Victoria, B.C. - Ten games in and the Isles are hanging on to a slim playoff spot tied with the Hensh, Hawks and Express with a 4-5-1 record. Scoring as expected is marginal at best. With no pure sniper the Isles rely on effort goals commonly called the garbage variety. Noted sniper Todd Marchant leads the way with 4 tallies this young season. The bread and butter this year was supposed to be stronger defensive play led by the Marchant, Mike Ricci and Trevor Linden line. Ricci has been outstanding closing in at a point per game while keeping close to an even plus/minus which is quite acceptable playing against other number 1 lines. Petr Nedved with his cast of rotating wingers have failed to provide the consistent second line spark although he has been getting some quality shots on net. The surprise this season has been the steller play of Steven Reinprecht and his line mates who have held their own.

The biggest problem for the depth challenged Isles is nagging injuries which have already placed 6 players on the day-to-day list with two farm call-ups already. The second problem has been the inconsistent play of both Fernadez and Kolzig between the pipes, although Kolzig came up with his first shut out against the Citadelle in his last outing.

We pulled young Morozov up this year out who impressed in the pre-season. Last year he was one of the Dugouts leading scorers and it looks like management feels he will mature better at the pro level if he's ever going to meet his lofty projections. Young Stanislav Chistov also turned some heads at camp and he is expected to make the jump next year. For now, the Isles will look at some of their 30+ year old players, but aren't actively shopping.

Oakville Bulls First Ten Games

Oakville, ON - The start of the regular season has been great for the Oakville Bulls this year. Not only have the Bulls posted the seasons longest winning streak (8 games) and longest undefeated streak (9 games), but they have also led the league in Goals For.

Leading the way has been center Alexei Zhamnov, who leads the scoring race, and players like Rod Brind'Amour, Alexander Mogilny, and Eric Lindros. Oakville's defense core has produced quite an abundance of offense with Ozolinsh, Gonchar, Poti and Zubov all averaging more than a point a game, which has resulted in all four guys being in the top twelve in defense scoring.

Goaltending has been pretty decent so far for the Bulls as Cechmanek and Dafoe have played good when called upon. Look for Dafoe's game to improve more so this upcoming week though.

The Bulls eighth game of the season (6-2 win over the Icedogs) marked a career milestone for Jacques Martin who reached 100 wins for his career, in fairly quick fashion.

Daily Bullz-Eye

- Rumours of Oakville trading Bure to the Corinthians in a blockbuster deal for Jagr still haven't lost any steam over the past week as reports indicated that Bure was starting to get unhappy with all the talk; more as it happens.

- Apparently Stallions fans are getting frustrated with their team only playing like a .500 club thus far; the pressure to replace Sittler continues to build.

- The Dropkicks "Be Afraid of Us" promotion kicked off yesterday and appears to be a big hit with fans; Calgary's hoping all of the extra money generated could go into the acquisition of an offensive defenseman at some point soon.

I'm Michael Landsberg;
'And that's the bottom line!...here in Oakville, Ontario!'.

Goalie Saving Poor Start To Season

Boston, MA(AP) - After the first month of action there is nothing talking for the Hawks. The team loses what is considered to be "easy" games, and the fans are getting frustrated. The Hawks had an abyslmal offseason and not many experts have predicted that the team will repeat last seasons playoff appearance. The team sits in 4th place in the division and 10th in the conference with a 3-4-3 record after 10 games.

There is one star that is shining on the Boston sky however and that's goalie Mike Vernon. The 38 year old keeper has so far been the Hawks only star player. He is leading the league in GAA and is among the leaders in save % aswell.

No one knows for sure what has happend to winger Glen Murray. He has scored 3 goals and has 1 assist in 10 games and he's a -4. Now thats just terrible. How long can Murray keep playing like this without having his playing time decreased drastically ?

Team captain, Steve Sullivan is leading the team in points just as expected. Moving Sully to LW during the offseason seems to be one of the few things the management did right, except for aquiring Mike Vernon of course. Sullivan has seen a lot of playing time but has showed no signs of fatigue so far.

Farm team coach Jean Ratelle has done great work with the defensemen down in the minors. Swede Andreas Lilja was promoted after only five games in the WFHL. Lilja yet a bit unused to the much tougher WHL games has struggled a bit, but then again, so has the enitre team. Andreas scored his first WHL goal in the Hawks 6-2 win over the Hench earlier this week. Another defenseman, Lance Ward is also doing well in the minors and is expected to make his debute within the next couple of weeks.

Toronto Searching For Answers

Toronto, ON - The Toronto Stallions are searching for answers to a poor start. Actually they had a great start winning the first four games, one by a shutout. Then the wheels fell off the wagon and they've lost five of the last six games. Head coach Darryl Sittler is searching for answers now. Goaltending seems to be the weakest link so far, but that is puzzling everyone considering that Cujo is supposed to be so strong. Rumours have it that his name has been mentioned in a few deals.

Scoring has been another problem, and again this is puzzling. Although the first line of Sakic-Elias-Palffy has been dominant, the other two lines have not. The third line in particular has been atrocious. Collectively they are a minus, and their offense has been non-existant. Corson and Muller have played well but Orszagh lost his position to Elomo when he was called up to cover Mullers injury. Elomo has since lost it to Grier who himself continues to be named in trade rumours. But Yzerman's line has been the most troubling. With linemates Sanderson and Renberg they were expected to be one of the most dominating second lines in the league. They simply have not lived up to the billing.

So now the rumours will start. Should they blow the team apart now and rebuild? Should Sittler have retired last year? Should we have kept Lindros? Should Cujo be moved? Should the Dropkicks even be in the WHL? The answers are simple: No, No, No, No and most definitely No.

The next ten games will be most telling. Toronto will have to do better than a .500 average. Changes might have to be made to accomplish this.

Icedogs Looking To Deal....No REALLY

Winnipeg, MB - Well the Icedogs Krushed the lowly Krushers a night ago with a 6-2 victory. The Icedogs were playing without both Jeff Farkas and Denis Arkhipov arguably their two best forwards and they had backup goaltender Dwayne Roloson between the pipes. This was a game that no one expected the 'dogs to win. Before the game there were rumours that Coach Craig MacTavish might be on his way out if the Icedogs had lost, but that talk has disappeared or at least until the Icedogs go on their next losing streak. The Icedogs next game is against the WHL leading Corinthians. Jeff Farkas is expected back in the lineup and Sean Burke will likely get the start in net. However Denis Arkhipov will sit this game out to rest a nagging injury. There are rumors floating around Winnipeg that the Icedogs could complete a deal within the next 48 hours that would bring in a top notch young offensive defenceman and a scoring winger. We'll have more news as it comes.

Random Bites: After the lost to the Icedogs, Golbez was found curled up in ball like a little kid begging Kubinec to trade Roenick back to Chicago. Golbez apparently made an offer of Trevor Kidd, Ivan Droppa and Lubos Bartecko. The Icedogs have the 2nd best powerplay and the 3rd best penalty kill after 10 games this year what the hell is with that. What's going on in Toronto with all that fire power especially from Geoff Sanderson why is their powerplay 2nd last in the WHL?? Can somebody please tell why the Corinthians have put Jagr on the trade block?? Also why does Kordyback put Thornton on the trade block and take him off the trade block all in a matter of 15 seconds. Since when is Mike Vernon the best goaltender in the league can somebody remind him that he's old enough to be the grandfather of some of the players that are currently in the WHL?? Vernon hang up the skates while you're looking good. Also somebody tell Milan Kraft he's not an enforcer this guy is averaging just over 5 penalty minutes a game.

So Far So Average

Calgary, AB - After ten games the Dropkicks wind up a game above .500, which is a reflection of a tough schedule, some tough breaks and some minor injuries. Losses came against top flight teams like the Voodoo, the Corinthians (twice) and the Krushers. Well, two quality teams and a team that should be very good. Too bad for Golbez.

Wins came against the Saints, Cougars, Citadelle and the opener against the Krushers. The Kicks tied the Raiders in a goaltending clinic put on by Nikolai Khabibulin.

Mike Modano hasn't been himself dince the third game of the season. He has laboured through a thumb injury that will actually sideline him from Thursday's rematch with the Raiders. Despite this injury Modano is among the four players producing at the point per game level.

Trade Block:

This is the thing...there aren't a whole lot of guys that the Dropkicks want to trade, but there is definitely a need for an offensive defenseman. When they traded Bryan Berard, who barely got a chance in Calgary, they received help next year in Petr Schastlivy and help this year in Chris Simon who has been very good thusfar.

But no offensive defenseman. There are a lot of them out there but not a lot of people selling at a price that the Kicks are willing to pay.

If the Dropkicks PP falls any further in the ranking we may see something happen anyway. As much as Kordyback likes this year's 8th pick in the draft Pavel Datsyuk he has mentioned his name when discussing who might leave town for the offensive QB that they need.

This month we look at Mario Lemieux from the Seattle Saints

NHL History:

Mario Lemieux was drafted first overall in the 1984 Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He made his NHL debut that season and scored on his first shift against the Bruins. In his rookie season, Mario scored 100 points and won the Calder Trophy. In 1985-86, still a teenager on opening day, Mario scored an amazing 141 points as the Penguins improved 23 points in the standings and scored more goals than they allowed for only the fourth time in their 19-year history. At season's end, Mario was awarded the Lester B. Pearson Award after he was voted by his peers as the best player in the league. After scoring 107 points in just 63 games in 1986-87, Mario stepped his game up in 1987-88 and scored a league-best 70 goals and 168 points for his first Art Ross Trophy (scoring leader), his first Hart Trophy (MVP) and second Lester B. Pearson Award. At the mid-season All-Star Game that year, Mario scored three goals and added three assists.

In 1988-89, Mario posted his best offensive numbers by pacing the league with 85 goals, 114 assists, 199 points, 31 power play goals and 13 short-handed goals (record). That year, he won his second straight Art Ross Trophy as the Penguins made the playoffs for the first time in seven years. On April 25, 1989, he scored five goals and three assists in a 10-7 victory over the Flyers; his four first-period goals tied a league record. In 1989-90, Mario was limited to just 59 games, but still recorded a 46-game point streak and finished the year with 123 points. In 1990-91, he played only 26 regular season games (45 points), but helped his team win its first-ever regular-season division (Patrick) title. In the playoffs that year, Mario scored 16 goals and 44 points as the Penguins won their first Stanley Cup title. For his efforts, Mario was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

In 1991-92, the Penguins slipped to third place in the Patrick Division, but Mario won his third Art Ross Trophy with 131 points in just 64 games. In the playoffs once again, Mario led the way with 16 goals and 34 points (just 15 games) for his second Conn Smythe Trophy and second Stanley Cup ring. In 1992-93, Mario had a stellar year as he scored 160 points in just 60 games to win his fourth Art Ross Trophy. He also won his third Pearson Award, second Hart Trophy and led the league with a +55 plus/minus rating. After the team won their first Presidents' Trophy at the end of the regular season, Mario scored 18 points in 11 playoff games as the Penguins made it as far as the second round of the playoffs for the third time in four years. After playing only 22 games in 1993-94, Mario took the 1994-95 season off to recover from back injuries.

In 1995-96, Mario returned to win his fifth scoring championship (161 points), fourth Pearson Award and third Hart Trophy as the Penguins won their fourth season divisional championship. That year, he tied a career high 31 power play goals and won his third goal-scoring crown with 69 goals. Mario played one final season in 1996-97 and won his sixth scoring championship with 122 points.

After three and a half years off the ice, Mario returned to the NHL on December 27, 2000 and recorded one goal and two assists in a 5-0 victory over the Maple Leafs. In his next game, Mario assisted on Jaromír Jágr's 1000th point and recorded his own 1,500th point. At week's end, Mario shared NHL Player of the Week honours with Jágr. On January 24, Mario scored his 40th NHL hat trick in a 3-1 victory over the Canadiens in his hometown, Montréal. At the end of January, Mario was named NHL Player of the Month. Mario then participated in his ninth mid-season All-Star Game. Despite playing only 43 games that year, he scored 35 goals and 71 points and paced the team with 16 power-play goals and a 20.5 shooting percentage.

WHL History:

Mario Lemieux was drafted in the 1st round (12th overall) by the Vancouver Drizzle(now the Detroit Cougars) in the 1995 Inaugural Entry Draft. Midway through the first season, on February 10th, 1996, he was traded to the Albany Mallrats(now Miami Oceanics) where he went on to win the first of his two Cyber Cups.

Mario retired following the 1997-8 season and remained retired for three years. He returned in the special Free Agent draft in 2001 where he was drafted in the 1st round (1st overall) by the Waterloo Lunatics. On December 15th of that year he was traded to the New England Dropkicks(now the Calgary Dropkicks) in a six player deal. Mario was again traded by the deadline that season in a deal that send him to the Oakville Bulls on March 24th, 2002 in a seven player deal. He went on to win his second Cyber Cup that year. He also played for Canada in the Olympics in 2002.

Mario won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1996 for his outstanding performance in winning the inaugural Cyber Cup. Mario has twice been named to the Second All Star team.

Mario currently plays for the Seattle Saints where his superior play has taken the Saints to second place in the Pacific Division, which is no easy task. They currently sit fourth in the league with 15 points and 7 wins. An amazing start for this club and Mario's 19 points is leading the way.

You Said It
(Transcripts of interviews with General Managers from around the W.H.L.)

You said it will be brought back again this year. Dave Hodge is currently under negotiations to renew his contract for another year. While he was prepared to do an interview this week, we felt it our obligation to get him under contract before he continued to do his show. Therefore the newspaper transcriptions will be delayed until his agent, Mark Gandler, and the WHL media relations board can come to some agreement.

In the meantime, any General Managers who would be interested in being on the show are encouraged to apply now.
