Victoria Struggling Along
Victoria, B.C. - Isles are struggling with a pityful 3 wins and 7 losses in their last 10. Throughout all this dark and gloom Petr Nedved potted 7 goals, fortunately or unfortunately 5 of them came in one game when he was pared with a high streaking but durable winger, the infamous Randy Burridge. Fans were pleased to see that combo work so effectively, even if it was short lived. Isles biggest problem has been on D which has totally collapsed. Most of the starting defensive rotation has been hit with nagging injuries. Isles expect to be sightly more competitive when their leader Boris Mironov gets rid of a nagging flu that has set his play back these past few weeks.

The Hawks Are Going Down...
Boston, MA(AP) - The Boston Hawks have played terrible the last 10 games. Only 2 games have been won. The team are, however, only a couple of points from a playoffs spot, that says a lot about the standard of the American division as well as the entire Campbell conference.
HAWKS 20 5 12 3 65 71 13 .325 2-8-0 1G winning
Goalie Mike Vernon is still the MVP of the team, if he doesn't perform the team is toast.
Rumors were going around that Tom Poti was on his way to Boston last week, but he ended up in Calgary and the Hawks worst rivals the Dropkicks. One of the Hawks 2 wins this month came against the Kicks.
To round off this short report from Boston I can announce that about anyone on the entire team except for Sullivan and Murray are up for grabs.
Bulls Successful On And Off The Ice This Week
Oakville, ON - Management in Oakville are happy with the way their team has performed this season as a whole, and point out that there's still room for improvement. The Bulls lead the league with a spectacular 135 goals for (almost 10 more than the next closest team the Voodoo). This means that the Bulls score an average of 6.75 goals per game, and with the Bulls also leading the league in shots per game with 46.40, there's definitely a good recipe for success brewing.
The last week and a half also saw the Bulls win the first race as the first team to reach the 100 GF plateau this season, beating both the Corinthians and Voodoo to the mark. Now we must wait and see which team can reach the 200 GF mark first.
Other news making its rounds the last three or four days is about yet another blockbuster deal that the Dropkicks and Bulls made; P.Bure, C.Drury, T.Poti, J.Pitkanen for J.Iginla, A.Tanguay, A.Foote, T.Simpson.
Obviously a deal of this magnitude wasn't something that the Bulls GM had in mind with his team playing so well at this point in time, but when the opportunity to bring back Iginla presented itself Kubinec listened intently. In any other circumstances this was a deal that would not have been confirmed as quickly as it was, but with a Kordyback's 'Kicks performing way below expectations Oakville thought that sending some offensive "kick" into the Calgary lineup wouldn't be all that bad. And so far it hasn't as the team has beaten both the Voodoo and Saints since the deal.
The Bulls DID bring in one huge sniper in Iginla, and Jaroms has stated that he's looking to regain his pass success here in Oakville after having such a dismal start to the season.
"It's great to be back, the fans are amazing here, and to play with some of the talent in this room is an honour on it's own", said an excited Jarome Iginla. It should be noted that Iginla also turned down wearing his old number 12 jersey upon his return, even though Mike Fisher offered it too him, because Jarome said that getting number 21 would signify a new start for him; one that people will remember him better for from here on in.
Ultimately, the Bulls vastly improved their team's overall defensive game with this deal. With so much offense on this team one would think that the 'run and gun' style of play would burn them eventually so this deal helps solidify a better defensive awareness. Players like Iginla and Foote are offensive, but they are better two-way players then Bure and Poti were; and good two-way play is something that's needed if Byron Dafoe is to get his game back to where it was at the beginning of the year.
Daily Bullz-Eye
- Look for triple-bobblehead night in Calgary this upcoming week as the Dropkicks promote the return of Bure, Drury and Poti to their club.
- 'IF' the playoffs were to start today the Citadelles would be 4th in the Wales Conference, and the Icedogs would actually make the cut in 8th place! definitely some surprising teams thus far.
- What kind of cheeri"O's" has Adam Oates been eating over the last couple weeks now? All of a sudden the guy is 9th overall in league scoring...
- While we're talking about players, even though it may be a little bit early, Maxime Ouellet should start to turn some heads of his critics about him not being a capable starter with the way he's carried his team this year.
I'm Michael Landsberg;
'And that's the bottom line!...here in Oakville, Ontario!'.
Dropkicks Changes Working Well...So Far
Calgary, AB - It's not every week that a team trades two of the game's top young stars and then talks about how great things are. Then again when you end a losing skid against the top team in the conference like the Kicks did against the Voodoo in the 20th game of the year, you just have to move on.
The Kicks sent Mike Comrie to Hamilton along with picks in the WHL10 draft and Drake Berehowsky for Alex Tanguay, Tomas Kaberle and Todd Simpson.
A few nights later, Jarome Iginla was sent back to Oakville along with Tanguay, Simpson and Adam Foote for Pavel Bure, Chris Drury, Tom Poti and can't-miss defensive prospect Joni Pitkanen.
The results are, in theory, a potent offensive attack. When Mike Modano recovers from a nearly season-long thumb injury the top three lines will likely look like:
LW - Heatley, Drury, Green
C - Modano, Thornton, Datsyuk
RW - Bure, O'Neill, Simon
The defensive attack is also more potent. Tom Poti and Tomas Kaberle should provide a stellar one-two punch on the powerplay. not to mention Gord Murphy, the ageless wonder who was recently called up from Sherwood Park. Murphy will see some powerplay time as well if Poti and Kaberle can't get it done.
All in all it would be a surprise if these changes don't make some impact over the next while. Kicks fans have their fingers crossed.
Random Kicks
One guy who didn't like the Iginla/Foote/Tanguay deal? Stallions GM Brian Howe. Howe called the trade a "silly, silly move". Time will tell how silly the deal will end up being, this writer supposes, but methinks that Howe is more concerned with an improvement in the performance of the divisional rival Bulls than any friendly advice for the Kicks GM...In addition to doing a bang up job for the hard-luck Vikings, coach Jason Welter has advanced past the opening round of "Popstars 5". Welter calls his sound a mix of Ricky Martin and Avril Lavigne....Speaking of new faces in the WHL, is there a creepier WHL GM than the Hensch's Chad Tameling? A web poll on WHL.com saw fans vote Chad "Most likely to hit on underage girls at the Greenhouse". Whatever that means...Finally, a flood hit the Winnipeg Icedogs' head office, making it nearly impossible for Jon Lemoine to make any deals. Several Martin Havlat fans are being held as suspects, accused of setting off the fire alarms and the sprinklers inside the building which allegedly caused the "flood".
More as it happens.
Edmonton News & Notes
Edmonton, AB - The Vikings are slowly settling into the season and have played much better of late. They have won four in a row and are finally playing with confidence.
Alexei Yashin has been nothing short of magnificent during this stretch and is inching his way into fourth in the second division (teams not named Bulls, Voodoo, Corinthians) scoring race.
The team called up Joffrey Lupul on Monday. Lupul went ninth overall in the WHL8 entry draft and has dominant back in junior since his return from Vikings training camp. "Joffrey gave us no choice but to recall him," GM Lee McEwen commented after Monday night's victory over the Lunatics. "He had a real solid camp and we told him he'd be back here if he could prove he had outgrown the Western Hockey League. Well he went back there and worked his tail off and is averaging almost a goal-a-game for a real bad hockey club. The fact is he can help our hockey club this year." Head coach Jason Welter said that, "Joff will get a chance to contribute, but he is going to be evaluated on a daily basis. The guys are rolling now, so it'll be tough to shake up the lines. But my job is to dress the 18 guys that give us a chance to win every night. If he can step up and be one of them, he'll play alot. If not at least he'll start learning how to be a professional hockey player."
One player who has to be disappointed with Lupul's call-up is Brad Richards. Richards went 3rd overall in the WHL7 entry draft and has yet to play a game for the Vikings. There are whispers that Richards is quietly being shopped, but at this point nothing concrete.

Enforcers Finally Living Up To Their Name
Saskatoon, SK - Due to the hard competition in the eastern division the Saskatoon enforcers have been studying the style of the Flyers and the Bruins in the seventies. To fully achieve this goal GM Strom has announced that Coach Tomas Steen will be relived of his duties and replaced by Dave "the hammer" Shultz. Mr Shultz has been with the team as a consultant since the game vs the Corinthians. As some local reporters have pointed out the Enforcers have been crashing the net more often since Shultz arrived. Despite this there is no connection to the sad injuries to division rivals Corinthians and Citadelles goal tenders.
Surely this change of head coach will result in player movements to fit Shultz physical type of hockey as opposed to Steens slick European style.
Toronto Special Teams - Night And Day
Toronto, ON - Toronto has improved a little the past ten games, thanks entirely to Curtis Joseph. Apparently being listed as 'on the block' last month didn't sit well with the elite goaltender. His play improved so well that he won the goalie of the week award. He directly won three games and was the only reason they tied the Cougars. It appears as though the Stallions are re-thinking the idea of trading Cujo.
Another reason the Stallions play has improved is Patrick Elias. Patrick scored ten goals in ten games, four of those were powerplay goals. While Toronto's goal scoring is still below expected numbers considering the offensive talent on the roster, they are still winning games and still blowing-out certain opponents. The problem has been the games that no one has been able to score. The Stallions have scored three or fewer goals in nine games this year, and those games resulted in one win, seven losses and one tie.
So what is the problem? Simple the powerplay is dismal. Ranked 20th in the league, they have managed only 17 goals on 105 chances. They are especially terrible on the road. Only five guys have powerplay goals in Toronto, Elias(5), Sakic(5), Palffy(3), Sanderson(3) and Yzerman(1). The Stallions hired George Armstrong this past off-season and gave him the powerplay. His efforts to date have been less than impressive. Changes are need here and George's tenure as an assistant coach seems to be coming to an untimely end.
Meanwhile the penalty kill is spectacular. Lanny MacDonald has handled the penalty killing unit the past five years. His record is decent enough, ranked 9th(80.5%) in 1998-9, 2nd(83.7%) in 1999-2000, 2nd(84.1%) in 2000-1, and 10th(81.5%) in 2001-2. He is ranked 1st(86.9%) so far this year. Considering that Toronto is ranked 22nd in penalty minutes per game, with an average of 31.5 minutes a game and are tied at 6th in powerplay chances against, this record is amazing.
(Taking a biographical and statistical look at superstars of today and tomorrow)
This month we look at Pavel Bure from the Calgary Dropkicks
NHL History:
Pavel Bure was drafted 113th overall in the 1989 Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. In 1991-92, he travelled to North America and joined the Canucks for 65 games and 34 exciting goals. After winning Rookie of the Month honours in March, Pavel won the season's Calder Trophy and finished first on the Canucks in goals, short-handed goals (tied, three) and game-winning goals (tied, six). The Canucks won the Smythe Division season title and then pushed into the second round of the playoffs (Pavel had six goals in 13 games). In 1992-93, Pavel followed up with a team-best 60-goal, 110-point effort and led the Canucks to their second straight Smythe Division season title (franchise record 101 points). Pavel participated in his first mid-season All-Star Game, won the Cyclone Taylor Award (team MVP) and led the club in plus/minus (+35), power-play goals (13), short-handed goals (seven) and shots (407).
In 1993-94, Pavel played in his second All-Star Game, was NHL Player of the Month in March and finished the season as the league's best goal scorer (60). Pavel won his second Cyclone Taylor Award, ranked eighth on The Hockey News Top-40 NHL players and led the Canucks in goals, assists (47), points (107), power-play goals (25), short-handed goals (four), game-winning goals (nine) and shots (374). In the playoffs, Pavel first scored a series-winning overtime goal to eliminate the Flames in the opening round. He then led his team to a Clarence Campbell Bowl championship in the Conference finals before losing to the Rangers in the final round. Pavel paced the league with 16 goals.
In the shortened 1994-95 season, Pavel again was a force as he led his team in goals (20), assists (23), points (43), short-handed goals (two) and shots (198). In 1995-96, Pavel missed most of the season (only 15 games), but still ranked as the 12th best player in The Hockey News Top-40 player poll at season's end. In 1996-97, Pavel played 63 games plus his third mid-season All-Star Game and led the Canucks with 265 shots. In 1997-98, Pavel returned to form and played in his fourth All-Star Game, won his third Cyclone Taylor Award and finished third in league scoring (90 points). He was the Canucks leader in goals (51), assists (39), power-play goals (13), short-handed goals (six), game-winning goals (four) and shots (329).
In 1998-99, Pavel was traded to the Florida Panthers with Bret Hedican, Brad Ference and a third-round pick for Ed Jovanovski, Dave Gagner, Mike Brown, Kevin Weekes and a first-round pick on January 17. He made his season debut soon after and quickly amassed 13 goals in just 11 games before suffering a knee injury on February 5 that terminated his year. Still, at season's end, The Hockey News ranked Pavel as the 10th best player in the league. In 1999-2000, Pavel was up to his tricks again as he won the inaugural Maurice Richard Trophy (58 goals) and finished second in league scoring (94 points). In December, Pavel won both Player of the Week (December 19) and Player of the Month honours. At the mid-season All-Star Game in February, Pavel dazzled the fans on a line with brother Valeri Bure and scored three goals to win MVP honours. By season's end, Pavel was the Panthers' leader in goals, points, plus/minus (+25), game-winning goals (14) and shots (360) and ranked seventh on The Hockey News Top-50 player list.
In 2000-01, Pavel won his second Richard Trophy with a league-best 59 goals (team record). He led all forwards in the league with 26:52 minutes of ice time per game and played in the mid-season All-Star Game. He paced his team with 33 assists, 92 points, 19 power-play goals (tied team record), five short-handed goals, eight game-winning goals and 384 shots (team record).
WHL History:
Pavel Bure was drafted 9th overall in the WHL initial Entry Draft by the Oakville Raptors(Seattle Saints). On April 1, 1996 he was traded to the Newfoundland Gangstaz(Quebec City Corinthians) in a six player, four draft pick deal.Later that year, actually the start of the next season he was traded to the Vancouver Voodoo on September 10, 1996.
After the 1996-7 season, June 13, 1997, he was dealt to the Waterloo Lunatics. Shortly after the 1997-8 season began, October 19, 1997, he was dealt to the Edmonton Vikings. Less than a month later he was shipped off to the Surrey Strangers(Rocky Mountain Express) on November 13, 1997. Pavel won his first of two Cyber Cups that year.
The following off-season he was traded again, this time he landed with the Toronto Stallions on August 6, 1998. One year and 20 days later, on October 26, 1999, he was traded to the Pittsburg Endless(Hudson River Hensch). On February 9, 2001 he was shipped to the Mississauga Icedogs(Winnipeg Icedogs). Six days later he was traded to the New England Dropkicks(Calgary Dropkicks).
He spent over a year with the Dropkicks before being dealt to the Oakville Bulls on March 24, 2002. Pavel won the second of his two Cyber Cups that year. Pavel was finally traded back to the Dropkicks on November 15, 2002, where rumours have it that his is not likely to be traded for at least the remainder of this year.
The only months Pavel has not been traded in are January, May, July and December. That is eleven trades to ten different teams in 7+ years. That is a lot of movement for an elite player.

(Transcripts of interviews with General Managers from around the W.H.L.)
The Web Hockey League Media department (WHLM) sadly reports that the "You Said It" program has been placed on hold indefinately due to a breakdown in contract talks with Dave Hodge and his agent. The last report was three weeks ago where Dave's agent, Mark Gandler, gave the magazine an ultimatum to either sign Dave or he will immediately sign with ESPN. While Hodge is not under contract with the WHLM neither has he signed with ESPN.
It is hoped that an agreement can be reached over the next two weeks with Mr. Hodge. Failing that, it is expected that the job will be shopped around to other candidates. There is supposed to be a short list of candidates that have been contacted by WHLM during these contract discussions.

Waterloo Lunatics:
For the first time, forward Darcy Tucker of the Waterloo Lunatics was a healthy scratch. With only 1 point in his last 10 games, and a -14 rating over that time, Tucker has fallen out of favour and has gone from the 2nd line to the press box. Many people in Waterloo are wondering if management is sending a message to Darcy, or sending a message to rest of the league saying that Darcy is on the block?
