Isles Promote Goring
Victoria, B.C. - Minutes after their loss to the Sparrows, Denis Potvin was sent packing to Yorkton. "Butch Goring has accepted the promotion and will be arriving tomorrow. This month was a write-off" exclaimed GM Dave MacDougall. "We were running with a set of streaking wingers, a hot goalie and the only player scoring was young Danny Markov. Six wins in the last 20 games is just unacceptable."
Potvin had no comment as he left the arena, but would the first to admit the players had tuned him out. This is the second consecutive month the Isles ended with 3 dismal wins, loosing any playoff hopes they had coming into the season.
The new management hierarchy for the Islanders is:
Head Coach: Butch Goring
Assistants: Greg Gilbert and John Tonelli
Goalie Coach: Vladislav Tretiak
Farm Coach: Denis Potvin
Arena: Waterfront Gardens
Captain: Petr Nedved
Assistants: Boris Mironov and Mike Ricci
Battle For Survival
Boston, MA(AP) - Bruce Dickinson reporting, the Boston Hawks just can't win games these days. The Hawks are now winless in their 5 last games. The last win came in a game against divisional rivals Krushers. since then the teams only point came in the 5-5 game against the Vikings. One explanation to the Hawks inability to win games could be that they have played 7 of the last 10 games away from home.
Here are the last 10 games
Hawks 1, Kicks 3
Hawks 4, Bulls 5
Hawks 3, Hench 5
Hawks 6, Seawolves 8
Hawks 5, Vikings 5
Hawks 3, Krushers 2
Vipers 4, Hawks 5
Hawks 3, Seawolves 5
Express 6, Hawks 3
Krushers 5, Hawks 2
My belief is that the team simply isn't good enough to win games. GM Nilsson doesn't want to or cant realize this and he continues to clam that these players are the foundation that he wants to build the team around. The team is filled with role players, guys who can fill out roster spots. It's always good to have that kind of players but you HAVE to have some star players that can carry the rest of the team aswell, thats what the Hawks lack right now. Last season we had Zubov and Berezin in those positions but with Zubov gone and Berezin being a vague shadow of his former self the Hawks are in serious trouble.
Goaltending wasn't a problem in the beginning of the season when veteran goalie Vernon played excellent hockey. Remarks about his age and his shape by my fellow colleagues made him a bit unsecure about himself and he has since then played awful. Brent Johnson has been given the chance to prove himself in net and he has done a half decent job of it. Both goalies have a GAA close to 5.0 and that wont win you any games unless you have the scoring capability of the Bulls or somehting like that.
The results from game day 30 is just in and the Hawks lost again, this time to arch rivals and nemisis the Calgary Dropkicks. They may have won this game but thats not whats important, whats important is the fact that the Hawks are still playing in Boston, the Kicks don't. Until next month, I'm Bruce Dickinson reporting for the Hawks, in the bottom of the standings.
Bears Looking For Help After Pathetic Start
Harrisburg, PA - The Bears have put out an APB on their defense. IF anyone finds it please report it to the nearest WHL authority. Any and all help or suggestions will be gladly accepted.
Detroit Farmhands Helping Out
Detroit, MI - In Detroit the Cougars have played well lately and have moved up to 1st position in the American Division, which is something that pleases the fanatic Detroit fans and the general manager, Andreas Nordholm.
"After a bad start of the season, we have found some stabilty out on the ice. The coaching staff have done a a great job. In the past 10 games we have moved up in the standings and are at this point ahead of the Chicago Krushers, which makes me very happy. I'm not suprised, because there is no chance that we will be behind a Chicago team in the final standings." said Nordholm.
Talanted defender, Christian Bäckman, has returned from his injury, but rookie Justin Kurtz and right winger Ty Jones are both out with knee injuries. The new injuries have forced the coaching staff to keep defender Henrik Tallinder in Detroit. They have also recalled defender Petr Smrek from the Cleveland Hounds.
"Tallinder played well during his first injury recall to Detroit and now with Kurtz and Jones gone he gets a chance to show us that he is ready for the big league and that we should keep him here. He's not far from being a regular WHL'er. His time will come, because Henrik is a real good blue liner. We also recalled Smrek that impressed a lot in the minors with the Hounds, and he has impressed in the WHL too. Smrek is here to stay" said head coach Bob Gainey.
Defender Smrek is the biggest suprise these past games. The talanted defender has 3 points and is a +10 in his first 6 games. The coaching staff also reports that center Jeff Halpern and defender Paul Mara have showed good form lately. They also stated that Igor Larionov is in better shape now than he was in the 80's. "I love the club, I love the game, I love this city" said 41 year old Larionov.
The Detroit powerplay continues to be the worst in the league and that is something that concerns us all. "I just can't figure it out. We were among the best last season with the same guys. This season we just can't score." said coach Gainey and continued "We will work hard on this the upcoming weeks to improve the power play unit".
Bulls Looking To Regain Early Season Play
Oakville, ON - Injuries and flu symptoms have hampered some of the Bulls players over the last week and a half now, and it is starting become blatantly obvious.
"What this team needs is a few days off to recuperate and refocus ourselves... Mental lapses are becoming more common, but I think that the issue has been addressed well by our staff; we'll get back to the way we play soon enough", commented Bulls GM Chris Kubinec.
Jacques Martin also had a few words on the recent happenings: "With so much success this season, I think guys are starting to relax a little bit on the ice, which has been leading to some costly mistakes in our own end, as well as missed opportunities in the opposing end... I've stressed the need to regain our focus in order to stay a top the league standings, because when you're at the top everyone's looking to knock you down, and this is exactly why we have to eliminate some of the mental breakdowns that have seen us squeak wins out of games that we should have blown the competition away in."
Rumours of Gary Roberts leaving town have been all over the place the last few days, but the gritty forward still remains a member of the Bulls for the time being.
"I haven't seen as much ice-time as I'd like, obviously, but whatever team I'm on I'll always give it everything I've got, so effort will never be an issue", commented Roberts.
Daily Bullz-Eye
- I guess all of the trade rumours in T.O. surrounding the likes of Cujo and Sanderson finally woke them up, and it shows as the Stallions have been on fire the last ten games.
- Chi-town has really been feeling the pressure lately with the team struggling, and losing the division lead to the Cougars. The Krushers problems don't just lay with the Cougars, but the Hensch are now just 3 points behind the Krushers. Yikes!
- Apparently someone leaked out information on Martin Brodeur possibly joining the WHL's most cult-like team (the Sparrows) as reports have indicated that the Sparrows are trying to steal away the tender; the Voodoo would be nuts to move this guy.
- Can someone please tell me how the Citadelles starter Maxime Ouellet continues to perform the way he is?... the guy is on fire right now, and this is so unbelievable because his team is on a 7 game losing streak; too bad the rest of his team can't help him out.
I'm Michael Landsberg;
'And that's the bottom line!...here in Oakville, Ontario!'.
Dropkicks On A Roll, Dropkicks On A Good Roll
Calgary, AB - Since we last talked about the Calgary Dropkicks, the team has gone 7-3-0 and a climbed from the bottom of the Pacific division to a .500 record and a playoff spot.
Much of this has to be attributed to some unpopular but successful moves made by management.
If one would have called that Jarome Iginla, Mike Comrie and Adam Foote would all be gone by this point at day one of the season they also probably bought Nortel Networks at under a dollar. Nortel now trades at 3 and the Dropkicks seem to be able to string together a few wins. Go figure.
The four players that the Kicks received in return have all done their part to right the ship. Led by Pavel Bure, the Dropkicks' nomination for TWHN's Top Player, the new/old Kicks (Kaberle, Poti, Drury and Bure all had previous experience in the Dropkicks organization) have put up impressive numbers and if they continue, the team should compete every night.
Random Kicks
Comrie and Iginla have both played well for their respective teams, the Steelcats and the Bulls...the Stallions are the hottest team in the WHL thanks to Brian Howe's new "Be Like Derlago" philosophy...Jason Welter continues to crank out the hits. His latest, a cover of Flock of Seagulls "I Ran" hit #25 this week....Chad Tameling on the other hand had his pilot for a reality show rejected by CTV. It featured the everyday life of Chad and his brother Jay. A network spokeswoman called the pilot "Disturbing...the number of shots that (Jay) injests during the 'Golden Tee at the Billiard Club' segment is something the network would not want its viewers to see. Chad? Well let's just say the girl that he takes home in the "Closing Time at the Fort BP" segment was much, much fatter than she looked. Somehow the camera actually took off about 40 pounds."...How about them Icedogs...and the critics said they were no good.
More as it happens.
Sakic On Fire, Leading His Team
Toronto, ON - The Stallions had an excellent week going 9-1 on the strength of goaltender Curtis Joseph and team captain Joe Sakic. Cujo, while not as outstanding as last week was the difference in four one-goal games, two against conference rivals Quebec City. While Geoff Sanderson and Teppo Numminen each had two game winning goals. This has become a team effort, always one of Sittlers hallmarks, as everyone is chipping in to help win. Whether it is Sanderson scoring, Sakic totalling 24 points in ten games or Cujo making those amazing stops, someone is stepping it up.
Toronto continues to list Curtis Joseph as available. He is in the final year of his contract and Toronto is not sure if they are going to be able to re-sign him. Curtis' agent is not talking, but it seems that Curtis realizes his chances for a Cup are dwindling and with the WHL's rules he is likely to use his free agency to move to a ... well to get a chance to ... he could ... here's hoping for Cujo's sake that Toronto re-signs him.
Geoff Sanderson is having another great year. With 17 goals and 26 points in 30 games so far, he is ranked 4th in goals and 5th in points with the club. Geoff continues to have one of those quietly successful years. Sanderson surpassed 500 points this week. There were a few other milestones this past week:
Player Milestone
Steve Yzerman 600 points
Geoff Sanderson 500 points
Phil Housley 400 points
Patrick Elias 300 points
Deron Quint 200 points
There are also a few milestones upcoming for Stallion players:
Player Milestone Needed
Joe Sakic 700 points 14 points
Mikael Renberg 500 points 18 points
Steve Yzerman 300 goals 11 goals
Michal Sykora 300 points 14 points
Mike Grier 200 points 19 points
Curtis Joseph 250 wins 12 wins

This month we look at Patrick Roy from the Waterloo Lunatics
NHL History:(Via NHLPA)
Patrick Roy was drafted 51st overall in the 1984 Entry Draft by the Montréal Canadiens. He made his NHL debut that season on February 23 with a 6-4 win over the Jets. In 1985-86, Patrick posted a 23-18-3 mark and was named an All-Rookie Team goaltender. In the playoffs, Patrick turned on the magic and led the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup championship. Patrick went 15-5 and posted a 1.92 goals-against average en route to the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Patrick then followed up with a 22-16-6 effort in his sophomore season in 1986-87. The Canadiens finished second in their division during the regular season and advanced to the Wales Conference finals in the playoffs. In 1987-88, Patrick co-won the Jennings Trophy with goaltending partner Bryan Hayward. Patrick won 23 games himself and the team won 103 points to capture the Adams Division season title. That year, he participated in his first mid-season All-Star Game; at year's end, he was named a Second Team All-Star. In 1988-89, Patrick again co-won the Jennings Trophy with Hayward and this time led the league with his own 2.47 GAA. Patrick was a First Team All-Star and posted an amazing 33-5-6 mark with four shutouts. He won the Vézina Trophy, the Trico Goaltending Award (save percentage) and Canadiens' Molson Cup for three-star selections. The Canadiens won 53 games and 115 points that year and won a second-straight Adams Division season title. In the playoffs, Patrick went 13-6 as the team won the Prince of Wales Trophy before losing to the Flames in the Stanley Cup finals. Patrick paced the league with a 2.09 GAA.
In 1989-90, Patrick won his second Vézina Trophy, his second First Team All-Star honour, his second Trico Goaltending Award and his third Jennings Trophy (again with Hayward). He played in his second All-Star Game, recorded a 2.53 GAA with three shutouts and paced the league with 31 wins. In the playoffs, he took the Canadiens to the second round. In 1990-91, Patrick was a Second Team All-Star and runner-up to the Vézina Trophy, the Trico Goaltending Award and the Jennings Trophy. He also played in his third All-Star Game. In the playoffs, he again took his team to the second round. In 1991-92, Patrick had another stellar year as he went 36-22-8 with a league-best 2.36 GAA and five shutouts. During the season, he won NHL Player of the Week honours on December 23 and played in the mid-season All-Star Game in January. He was a First Team All-Star and winner of the Vézina Trophy, the Jennings Trophy (this time by himself) and the Canadiens' Molson Cup. He was also the first runner-up to the Hart Trophy and led his team to an Adams Division season title. In the playoffs, Patrick had a 2.62 GAA as the Canadiens advanced to the second round for the third-straight year.
In 1992-93, Patrick went 31-25-5 with a 3.20 GAA. In January, he played in the mid-season All-Star Game at the Montréal Forum. While the Canadiens slipped to third in the Adams Division, they posted 100-plus points (102) in the standings for the first time in five years. In the playoffs, Patrick was superb as he paced the league with 16 wins and a 2.13 GAA en route to a Stanley Cup championship. He led the Canadiens to a league-record ten-straight overtime victories and captured his second Conn Smythe Trophy. At year's end, he ranked seventh on The Hockey News' Top-25 NHL Players list.
In 1993-94, Patrick won Player of the Week honours on November 1, was a mid-season All-Star in January and won Player of the Month honours in February. He went 35-17-11 and paced the league with seven shutouts. He finished third in voting for the Vézina Trophy and won his third Canadiens' Molson Cup for three-star selections. In the playoffs, he went 3-3 with a 2.56 GAA. At year's end, Patrick ranked fourth on The Hockey News' Top-40 Player list. In the shortened 1994-95 season, Patrick went 17-20-6 as the team missed the playoffs for the first time in 25 years. That year, Patrick won his fourth Canadiens' Molson Cup.
In 1995-96, Patrick was 12-9-1 when he was traded on December 6 with Mike Keane to the Colorado Avalanche for Andrei Kovalenko, Martin Rucinský and Jocelyn Thibault. With the Avalanche, Patrick went 22-15-1 to finish with 30-plus wins for the sixth time in his career. In the playoffs, Patrick led the Avalanche to a Clarence Campbell Bowl victory in the Western Conference finals and then a Stanley Cup championship over the Panthers. Patrick paced the league with 22 games by a goaltender, 16 wins, 1,454 minutes and three shutouts. He also posted a 1-0 triple-overtime shutout in the final game of the playoffs. At year's end, Patrick was ranked the third-best player on The Hockey News' Top-40 NHL Players list.
In 1996-97, Patrick led the Avalanche to a Presidents' Trophy championship with a league-best 38 wins. That year, he played in his seventh All-Star Game, posted a career-low 2.32 GAA and tied a career high with seven shutouts. He won Player of the Week honours in January and finished third in year-end voting for the Vézina Trophy. In the playoffs, Patrick and the Avalanche advanced to the Western Conference finals. In 1997-98, Patrick opened the season with Player of the Week honours (October 6) and finished the year at 31-19-13 with four shutouts. He played in his eighth All-Star Game and the Avalanche won another Pacific Division title. In the playoffs, Patrick posted a 2.51 GAA in seven games.
In 1998-99, Patrick went 32-19-8 (a record-setting ninth 30-win season) with a 2.29 GAA and five shutouts. Patrick won Player of the Month honours in January and Player of the Week honours on March 28 while the Avalanche won the Northwest Division season title. In the playoffs, the Avalanche again advanced to the Western Conference finals. In 1999-2000, Patrick won 32 games (his tenth 30-win season) and posted a new low 2.28 GAA. In the playoffs, Patrick led the team to its third appearance in the Western Conference finals in four years.
In 2000-01, Patrick led the Avalanche to a Presidents' Trophy championship with a club-record 52 wins and 118 points. Patrick himself set a team record with 40 wins and a 2.21 GAA. On October 17 against the Capitals (4-3 overtime win), Patrick passed Terry Sawchuk as the league's all-time wins leader. Later that year in February, he was the starting goaltender at the 2001 All-Star Game in Colorado. In the playoffs, Patrick helped his team win both the Clarence Campbell Bowl and the Stanley Cup. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy, becoming the first player in league history to win the award three times.
WHL History:
Patrick Roy was drafted 27th overall in the WHL initial Entry Draft by the Edmonton Vikings. On September 13, 1996 he was traded to the Struer Norseman(Hollywood Seawolves). Twelve days later he was traded to the Calgary Clowns(Seattle Saints) on September 25, 1996.
He was finally traded to the Waterloo Lunatics on March 7, 1997, where he has played ever since. Patrick Roy won the William Jennings in 1996 while with the Vikings. In 1999 he was awarded the Vezina playing for the Lunatics and was named a 1st team all-star.
Patrick Roy is one of the best goalies in the league who has never won the Cyber Cup. If there is any knock against this aging veteran, it is his inability to get the job done during the post season.

(Transcripts of interviews with General Managers from around the W.H.L.)
Talks have completely broken down between Dave Hodge and the Web Hockey League Media department (WHLM).
Therefore, it is with great regret that we will be discontinuing this feature. Unfortunately a deal between the two parties was just not possible. We will be looking for someone else to fill this role, but until further notice, "You Said It" will no longer be heard.
