Team News
Toronto Loses A Long Time Player
Toronto, Ontario (AP)- Toronto's week started with a thud, losing 5-0 to the Voodoo in Vancouver. Sittler then shook up the lines placing Steve Heinze on the second line bumping Stephane Richer to the third line. It immediately paid dividends on the second line as they came home and beat the Steelcats 6-3 and then went to Miami and hammered their farm players 15-6. Heinze had 4 goals and 1 assist in those two games and his line compiled 7 goals and 13 assists. The third line however was less impressive over the three games they were together going a combined -25 and scoring just 2 goals and 2 assists. Sittler benched Stephane Richer in the last game of the week against Quebec City and played gritty Johan Lindbom in his place, as well as giving Don Sweeney third line duties over Michal Sykora. The line scored the first two goals of the game and totaled 2 goals and 4 assists in the win, while Steve Heinze's second line scored the game winner.
The week showed Toronto management they still needed to upgrade. Realizing the need for another tough forward, Toronto created a wish-list of aggressive and productive forwards. They talked with a few teams including recent trading partners Rocky Mountain as well as Miami, Chcoutimi and Edmonton. It was rumoured they were looking at Doug Gilmour or Craig Conroy. Almost every discussion involved promising center Yanic Perreault. We asked Assistant General Manager and head coach Darryl Sittler;
Sittler: "We had a list of about 8 names. Our perennial interest in one of Edmonton's players topped our list but it was impossible to work out a deal, the pieces just weren't there. The next name on our list was Trevor Linden, but we'd talked to the Sparrows before and were turned away. So we talked to the Express about Doug Gilmour, they had listed him as available before and we were interested. With Gilmour's age we found any deal too expensive. We then asked the Oceanics about Craig Conroy, but again the asking price we too high. With our list dwindling we returned to Trevor's name, so we called Mike Hebert. It was a deal basically meant to happen, the deal was struck rather quickly and the details were worked out in no time."
As so, Trevor Linden became a Stallion. The gritty right winger is on pace for a career year in points with 51 points in 66 games, he requires just 8 more points. He scored his 100th career goal and 300th career point this season, and is 12 assists shy of 200 for his career. Leaving Toronto was the aforementioned Yanic Perreault, who has long been coveted by General Manager Mike Hebert. Chicoutimi also get right winger Stephane Richer. Stephane said earlier this season he was seriously considering retiring at the end of the year, and had made it known to the Stallion's management that he would dearly like to finish playing for a Quebec team having been born in Ripon, Quebec.
We spoke to General Manager Howe:
Howe: "It was hard to move Richer again. We moved him mid-season last year and then reacquired him at the deadline. He's been a big part of this team. But he wanted to go to Quebec to finish his career and we felt it was within our power to do it. We wish him great success in Chicoutimi unless, of course, we happen to meet in the playoffs."
Stephane Richer had played 315 games in a Stallions jersey scoring 125 goals and 139 assists, ranking him 2nd in all-time scoring for the club behind Joe Sakic. He had 16 game winning goals for Toronto, again behind only Joe Sakic. Stephane Richer was a huge part of Toronto's playoff success the past four years, appearing in 58 post season games and scoring 24 goals and 21 assists placing him 2nd on the all-time playoff scoring list. He is 2nd in almost every offensive category including; Goals, Assists, Points, PP Goals, Game Winners and Shots. He once held the team records for PP goals and shots in a season. The `Alternate's` "A" that Richer wore the past four years will be given to newcomer Brian Leetch.
The final word will go to team captain Joe Sakic;
Sakic: "Richer will be sorely missed in this dressing room. He was a good leader, a great player and an even better person. Everyone here wishes him great success."
Bulls Prepare For A Playoff Run
Oakville, Ontario (AP)- Well, with the play-offs only 17 games away the Bulls have decided that this team is going to be making a play-off run. The Bulls will not be sellers this year, instead the Bulls are buyers and are currently fine-tuning their line-up. With the WHL trade deadline approaching in 7 games, the Bulls are frantically trying to work out some complications in some current deals. In the last week the Bulls have completed two deals; and in those deals they dealt away Stephane Fiset, Dan Bylsma, Mike Sullivan, and a 5th round pick and acquired Dominic Roussel, Robert Petrovicky, Teemu Riihijarvi, and youngster Stefan Cherneski. Oakville feels that they are still in need of that one 1st or 2nd line forward that could help put them over the top in the play-offs, and would certainly help their chances in any series verses the Stallions, Sparrows, Icedogs or Corinthians.
It's obvious that the Bulls management is acquiring some more skilled depth for the play-off run this year, and although a huge deal before the deadline is being speculated that would involve players like Bure and Zubov, the Bulls are brushing off any rumors of a trade that would significantly change the teams face before the deadline.
GM Kubinec commented: "It just doesn't make much sense to go pull off a huge deal that will not really change the quality we are getting back in return right before the play-offs. We simply won't make a deal that is not going to benefit our team. We are not interested in trading for a guy that's basically the same as what we are giving up. Its not logical. However, we ARE in talks with a few teams and if we work something out soon, then you guys will be the first to know."
With this stated it looks like the fans will just have to play the waiting game for now, and see what really happens come D-day compared to what the rumors state will happen.
I'm Michael Landsberg reporting.
'And that's the bottom line!...here in Oakville, Ontario!'.
More Moves In New England?
New England, Massachusetts - The Dropkicks are rumoured to be in talks with an unnamed team looking to acquire what our source calls "a top line player". With a lineup that includes Selanne,Bure,Weight, Zhamnov and Drury it seems odd that they'd either need to add such a player or that they's be willing to give one up.
The latter point makes one believe that a key prospect may be leaving New England's system.
Random Kicks
The Dropkicks have won eight straight going into Monday's game vs the Voodoo. The 'Kicks won last time vs Kinnaird's crew but they have an atrocious record in Vancouver over the years.
Some Light In The Tunnel For Montreal?
(GNN) Montreal, Quebec - A .500 week, 2 straight wins and the team's now only 3 points behind 8th place, but we have a tough battle with the Vipers who have an equal number of points. The downside is that they only played 63 games versus our 66. But new winds are blowing and the recent acquirement of scorer Donald Audette makes the team more offensive. Also rookie defender Ron Hainsey made his debut and has now played for 3 games and with 3 points he is making an impact and seems to take Paul Coffey's role very well. In the trade Audette came and prospect Rostislav Klesla, veteran Paul Coffey and young defenceman Filip Kuba packed their bags for the reigning champions in the Rocky Mountain. We wish them all luck and maybe Paul finally can compete for the ring he wanted for so long.
Looking Ahead To The Olympics
Paul Varelans - Chicago Sun Times
Chicago, Illinois - With the Canadian Hockey Association soon to announce the 2 men who will be Co-GM'ing the Canadian Olympic Effort, much of the hockey world has been abuzz about possible selections for each of the Countries in the Olympic tournament. With the buzz being created, we take a look forward one year and see which Krushers could be in Salt Lake City.
Chris Rogles - Goaltender - U.S.A.
How could Team U.S.A. NOT name Rogles as one of the 3 goaltenders going, if not the starter. A possible winner of this year's WHL Goaltender of the Year, "Rogaine" is 3rd in GAA, 2nd in Save Percentage (behind teammate Trevor Kidd), and has been a stalwart for the Krushers for years. He's also very popular among the American hockey fans, but never seems to get the respect that is deserved of him. His post-season failures to date may hinder his chances to be #1, but no other American goaltender is close to the level of Rogles.
Jeremy Roenick - Center - U.S.A. (65GP 28g-35a-63pts +17)
Quite possibly the captain of Team U.S.A. at this point. Roenick is recognized as one of the all-time premier 2-way players in WHL history, and has continued his great play this season. A favorite among American fans, his selection to Team U.S.A. is a no-brainer (hence, even a doofus like Kordyback would select him).
Dmitri Khristich - Wing - Russia or Team World (52GP 11g-35a-46pts +12)
The format for the Olympic tournament has not been finalized as of yet. Depending on the outcome, Khristich could represent Russia, or due to his Ukrainian heritage, he could play on a Team World, as he did in 1998 (Where he had 6 points and was +5 in 8 games). 2-way forward who can play all 3 forward positions. He'll be there in one form or another most likely.
Rob Blake - Defenseman - Canada (65GP 12g-32a-44pts +17)
Already mentioned by candidate GM Kris Pongratz as a sure-fire Top 8 pick for Team Canada in 2002. Rob Blake is a no-brainer selection for Team Canada, and may even be named as Team Captain, or an alternate. However, his recent contract demands may mean he may not be a Krusher after this season. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, seeing as Blake is currently experiencing his worst offensive output in 3 seasons.
Brad Stuart - Defenseman - Canada (65GP 7g-24a-31pts +4)
A dark-horse candidate for Team Canada, Stuart's offensive output has dropped some, but his defensive play has been tremendous this season. Canadian media have hinted that the men who will run Team Canada will be looking for add 2-3 very young players to the roster. Stuart be one of those lucky guys.
Andrei Kovalenko - Winger - Team Russia (60GP 32g-18a-50pts +10)
Not a favorite of the Old-Guard who run Team Russia, Kovalenko plays too much of a Canadian-style game (when he's not drinking too much vodka) to be likely for him to be playing with Team Russia. However, he has had a career year, and he can score plenty of goals, and provide size up front. A dark-horse candidate if he keeps producing goals. (Note, Kovalenko played with the last Team Russia, compiling 1 goal and 4 assists in 8 games)
Jan Hrdina - Center - Team Czech Republic (62GP 9g-18a-27pts +4)
An extremely proficient faceoff man, Hrdina (which translates into 'Hero' from Czech, amazingly enough), is a candidate to be the 4th line center for the Czechs in Salt Lake City. Hrdina has drawn rave reviews for his defensive efficiency in Chi-Town this season, as Jan has won a league-leading 62.0% of his faceoffs, and has shut down opposing snipers often.
Jiri Slegr - Defenseman - Team Czech Republic (64gp 9g-14a-23pts +10)
Son-in-law of Czech legend Jiri Bubla, Slegr is a solid 2-way defenseman who may draw into the Czech 3rd pairing on defense. No weakness to his game, and he's a good skater. Czech Hockey Federation insiders told me that Slegr has a chance to crack the line-up if he can step up his play from now to until the selections are made.
Robert Reichel - RW/C - Team Czech Republic (64gp 12g-9a-21pts +3)
I know the thought of a struggling Reichel making the Czech Olympic team seems quite amusing, but Reichel is ultra-respected back home, especially by the bigwigs at the Federation. One-dimensional Reichel has experience with the 1998 Czech Team (6 points in 10 games), and knows how to play within their system. May be picked to play alongside Hrdina on the 4th line.
Sergei Krivokrasov - RW - Team Russia (42GP 12g-4a-16pts -1)
Ok, not bloody likely, but you never know. One of the WHL's fastest skaters, and one of the most inconsistent players, Krivokrasov would make the roster only if others ahead of him were injured. After a bit of a career year last season, it looks like Krivo has played himself away from any chance at the Olympics.
Richard Zednik - RW/LW - Team Slovakia (42GP 9g-7a-16pts +3)
Krushers GM Jes Golbez Ursulak, one of two WHL Slovak-Ukrainians (Peter Bondra being the other), is likely to team up with Bondra again and will be running Team Slovakia's entry into the Olympics. Suffice it to say, Golbez enjoys the hard work and speed of Zednik, although the lack of production is a bit of a worry. With the snipers available to Golbez, it's likely Zednik will be asked to perform checking duties. Zednik is a shoo-in to make the team as long as he is a Krusher.
Christer Olsson - Defenseman - Team Sweden (47gp 5g-18a-23pts +26)
The ultra-finesse of Olsson has not gone unnoticed by the scouts from the Swedish Federation. One of the assists-leaders among defenseman over the past 2 seasons, Olsson's game is tailor-made for the Olympic arena.
Depending on the men in charge of the respective Olympic teams, the Krushers could be well represented in the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002. Seeing as the Olympics are about 10 months away, we all know ANYTHING can happen between then and now. Until then, all we can do is speculate and daydream.
For the Krushers, this is Paul Varelans.
Islanders Move Former First Round Pick
Victoria, British Columbia - The Islanders announce their first pick in last year's draft, Brian Rafalski, has been traded pending the Commissioner's confirmation. The trade will bring a struggling young defenseman and a highly touted prospect into the organization. Rafalski had assumed a major leadership role both on and off the ice and his void will not be filled easily. Victoria front office indicated there was the possibility of several more trades of veteran players. It is unlikely Nedved, O'Neill, Fernandez or any of our players eligible for re-rates will be moved without similar compensation.
There are several players who can provide that extra level of skill that would help a contending team towards the Cup.

Hot and Cold
HOT
Dropkicks 8-1-1 & 8 games winning - Just ten points behind Conference leader.
VooDoo 9-1-1 - Maintains Conference lead and I'll say no more!!
Icedogs 8-1-1 - Stay in the running for conference title.
COLD
Endless 1-8-1 - Struggles continue for Bily's boys.
Oceanics 2-7-1 - Oceanics tanking the season.
Saints 2-7-1 & 4 games losing - Droping out of contention real fast.

Playoff Report
This will serve as a playoff picture preview for now:
Magic Number equals any combination of wins by the 8th place team and losses by the team listed that will eliminate that team. e.g.
Steelcats have 59 points in 65 games and the Lunatics have 35 points in 65 games. If the 'Cats were to lose every game they played from now to the end of the season, they'd still have 59 points. If the Lunatics were to lose just 8 more of their 19 games and win the other 11 they could only amass 57 points. So their Magic Number is 8, either 8 losses by them or 8 wins by the 'Cats would mathematically eliminate their chances of making the playoffs.
If you still don't understand, too bad. :)
