Fanny Merandez as he is affectionately called, is our player of the week. Fernandez shines as Islanders hit 7 game undefeated streak. Manny deserves goalie of the week not just for the Isles but the WHL. To his fans delight, this 26 year old brought this west coast franchise some respectability. His 6 game heroics helped move the team out of the cold, damp cellar of the Pacific Division.

Toronto - The Stallions had a hard stretch the past five games. It started with two sound wins over Almont and those horribly inept Icedogs by a combined score of 13-4. Trying to ride that success into New England however was not possible. Toronto fell 5-2 to the Dropkicks who should not have been able to keep up. Fleury has started to transform that club. We returned to our winning ways upon meeting the Dominators in Des Moines, with a 7-1 pounding. From there we flew into Seattle for what we thought would be an easy win, and lo-and-behold we get beaten 5-4. Seattle seems to have our number this year, with 2 ties and a win against us.

With three of our next five games on the road, we will have to pull things together and play better. We start out back in Des Moines where we hope to get another win. We then go to Montreal for a classic matchup (Toronto-Montreal), and the first game between these two clubs since the playoffs. We then fly into Edmonton for the first game since the huge trade of Alexei Yashin, Roman Hamrlik and Mattieu Schnieder for Eric Lindros and Darryl Sydor. Watch for everyone to try and make the case that one side won that deal. Finally we come home for two games first against the surprising Islanders who have already beaten the powerhouses of Vancouver, Rocky Mountain and Quebec City. Finally we host the Dominators.

All in all, Darryl Sittler has to be happy with his group. Sporting an 11-4-2 record so far, and first or second in goals for, goals against and shots for. Eric Lindros and Joe Sakic are both playing well, and Cujo, while looking a little fatigued, is playing fantastic.

KRUSHERS BACK ON TOP, THANKS FOR KOVALENKO

Chicago (AP) - The Krushers in 1st Place? It's about time! Although the team has struggled with chemistry, and a lack of goal scoring, the Krushers' 8-6-2 record is good enough to hold the lead in the weak American Division.

What's even sweeter than that? Well lookee who's on the bottom? Why it's Chris Kordyback and the Dropkicks...life is good!

"It's much too early yet," smiled Krushers GM Jes Golbez, "I mean, we have 50+ games to play, but I'm clipping these Standings out of the paper and clipping them on my desk...Krushers in 1st and Dropkicks in 5th...this is exactly how it should be!"

Comeback Player of the Year...Andrei Kovalenko?

Hands up, who wanted Kovalenko traded before the start of the season? If you didn't have your hand up, you must not be a Krushers' fan (and hence, a total loser). And you had good reason.

Last season, Andrei Kovalenko stunk up the joint like Chris Kordyback's wife after a breakfast burrito, netting a whopping 7 goals and 15 assists in 81 games...this from a guy who's capable of scoring goals if he feels like it.

But the stars must be aligned properly this season. As Kovalenko has found himself back with Jeremy Roenick and Sergei Samsonov, "Tank" has scored 12 goals in 16 games, good for 5th in the WHL.

"This feels good," commented Tank after a recent practice, "I haven't felt this good since I drink vodka last night!"

Umm ok...but how was Tank feeling last season? Just ask Robert Reichel, who has but 1 goal and 0 assists in 16 games...numbers even a 4th line goon should be able to put up.

"This totally sucks fucking ass!" screamed Reichel at reporters, "My wife won't stop her bitching, I can't get laid with the hot girls on the road, and you reporters keep pressing me for answers. Tell coach to give me Power Play time, and maybe I'll score some fucking goals!"

Well Robert "Third" Reichel, maybe you'd get Power Play time if you could score more than Mike Ricci at a lesbian wedding.

For the Krushers, this is Paul Varelens.

Miami (AP) - The OCEANICS rebounded well from a 2 game loosing skid to tie with one of the strongest teams in the league, the Corinths. Beezer was "the Man" again as he stopped 44 shots including 19 in a 3rd period surge of the Corinths. After Aivazoff kicked it off for the OCEANICS, the Corinths snatched 4 goals in a row, just to be answered by 3 more OCEANICS goals. It is amazing how the Miami franchise is able to come from behind late in the game to tie or win hockey games.

Already winning 7 games the OCEANICS are now tied for second place in their division, trailing the Krushers by only one point. The most pleasant surprise so far is Taylor Pyatt who leads rookies in all major scoring categories and the defender Kim Johnsson who has 12 points in 16 games. Another revelation is David Tanabe who has 4 points in 5 games since he got called up from the top minor league affiliation of the OCEANICS, the Pensacola White Tips.

There is more to come from the OCEANICS.
-------

Montreal - A pretty good week for the Montreal team where they lined up 3 straight wins in the end. One of them a real big one when they smashed Brodeur's GAA by beating the Voodoo 9-7. The Powerplay has improved much over the last week but the PK is still the worst in the league. Now with Smehlik back after a long injury that will probably change. Hopefully the winning streak can continue over the next week and the team can get up to .500.
-------

Saskatoon - The Saskatoon Enforcers reveals their first trade of this season.

Jarome Iginla is acquired from Hamilton Steelcats in exchange for struggling LW Andrew Brunette and prospect centerman Nik Antropov.

At the press conference:

GM Strom: "I'm glad to announce that today Jarome Iginla has become part of our organization. To get a quality player as Jarome we had to part with quality players too. Andrew Brunette is a pure sniper and PP specialist but in 16 games he has yet to score. I think he needed a change to get his touch back and we wish him good luck in his career with the Steelcats. Nik Antropov is a very promising center but as of now we have several similar players and Nik wouldn't play pro hockey this year with us. I feel our team is stronger and we now have three lines who can score. I expect Jarome to play in game 17 against the Dropkicks if everything goes as planned."
-------

Oakville - The Bulls would like to make it official to the league that they will be listening to offers regarding just about everyone on the team. The Bulls started the season great, but have fallen into a 9 game winless streak dropping them way below .500 on the season. This team has great talent and has shocked the league with their lackluster performances. Night after night the team plays like they have no reason to win, and this is really hurting the club. Look for some big shake-ups soon. Jeff Hackett has been singled out as just one of the several players who have played horrible, and he especially has not shown that he deserves the starting job in Oakville at this point in time.

Vikings Team News

Edmonton - No one in Edmonton has been able to figure out what kind of team the Vikings are going to be this season.  The Vikes have been hot and cold so far this year, but don't look like they will be as solid as they were last season. Alexei Yashin leads the team in scoring but is a disappointing -12 already.  New coach Rob Zicarelli still hasn't decided on a number one goalie as Jamie Storr, Dan Cloutier and Garth Snow have split the first seventeen games.  The team seems to be waiting for one of the three to step up and entrench himself as the #1 starter but it has not happened as of yet.

The Vikes have been relatively quiet in trade talks through the season's first month after talks to acquire Doug Weight fell through.  Lee McEwen seems far from content with his roster but has not yet approached full scale "sell off" mode.

Vikes prospect Brad Boyes is off to a good start in the OHL and currently sits second in league scoring.

Voodoo Noos

Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia (AP) - GM Darren Kinnaird was seen leaving the lovely and luxurious Sheraton Nusa Indah Resort late Sunday morning in Nusa Dua Bali.  We tried to catch up with him but only got a few words.

"Darren did you find any new talent here last night?"
"If that is what you want to call it, yes"

"A new center, defenseman?"
"Oh, no.  I guess we are talking about something different."

"So are you happy with the play of the Voodoo so far?"
"We are doing well, but I am not sure what the hell our power play is doing... I mean what a joke.  I will have to sort it out when I return to Vancouver on Wednesday."

"What about a trade rumour from the Bulls.  Are they shopping to get Paul Kariya?"
"Yeah, I really did not have a chance to get back to Chris, but in a nutshell, Kariya is not going anywhere.  I must be going now, I need some sleep and my head really hurts."

Forsberg.jpg
This weeks spotlight will focus on Peter Forsberg.

In the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers selected Peter in the first round (sixth overall) of the 1991 Entry Draft. The Flyers traded him to Quebec with Steve Duchesne, Ron Hextall, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Chris Simon, first-round picks in 1993 and 1994, and cash for Eric Lindros on June 30, 1992, before Peter would ever play for the Flyers. He made his debut with the Nordiques in 1994-95, leading NHL rookies in points (50) and assists (35). As a result, he was named NHL Rookie of the Year. In 1995-96, he recorded career-highs in goals (30), assists (86), and points (116), ranking fourth in the NHL in assists and fifth in points. His successful season was topped off with a nomination to the NHL All-Star Team, as well as a Stanley Cup Championship in 1996. Peter was an All-Star once again in 1996-97, leading the team with 86 points (28 goals, 58 assists) and a plus-31 rating. He led the team in scoring again in 1997-98, tallying 91 points (25 goals, 66 assists) in 72 games. He was named an NHL First Team All-Star in 1998. In 1998-99, Peter led the Avalanche in scoring, notching 30 goals, 67 assists for 97 points. In 1999-2000, he scored 14 goals and 37 assists in a season in which he was limited to 49 games due to injury. On October 18, 2000, Peter scored the overtime winning goal in Patrick Roy's record-breaking 448th career victory.

Before making his North American debut, Peter played for MoDo of the Swedish Elitserien. In 1992-93, he scored 23 goals and 24 assists in 39 games. In 1993-94, he scored 18 goals and 26 assists in 39 games.

Peter played at the 1993 World Junior Championships for Sweden. In 1994, he was a member of the Swedish Olympic Team, and scored the game-winning shoot out goal against Team Canada to win the gold medal. In 1996, he participated in the World Cup of Hockey with Team Sweden, and again in 1998 at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

Peter's nickname is "Foppa". His father, Kent, coached Sweden at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and the 1998 Winter Olympics. Peter was the first hockey player to ever appear on a Swedish postage stamp.

In the WHL he was originally drafted 21st overall by the Halifax Spiders (Spokane Chiefs). He was traded late in that first year to the Minneapolis Monarchs(Mississauga Icedogs) along with Dimitri Khristich, Joel Otto and Andrei Trefilov for Ron Francis, Jeff Shevalier, Sergei Nemchinov, Guy Hebert and Robert Lang.

After two seasons in Minneapolis and a very disappointing playoffs in 1997-98 he was traded during the entry draft to Vancouver with Sami Kapanen and Marcus Nilson for Mike Modano, Martin Gelinas, Anders Eriksson and the Voodoo's 5th round draft pick.

Peter had a career year last year with 54 goals and 113 points with 10 game winners. His current numbers this year are phenomenal, with 13 goals and 35 points giving him a projected finish of 64 goals and 172 points. Here's hoping he can keep up this pace!

Peter has led this Voodoo team the past three years now. His only drawback seeming to be that he cannot lead them to the finals or to a Cup. They will try once again this year to make it all the way.

Here are his current stats in the WHL:

Victoria Islanders
After several inquiries, Stevie Reinprecht is not readily available for trade. Having put together a moderately balanced club with three contributing lines, future trades will require maintaining this balance. Our scoring prowess leaves something to be desired as does our defensive play. We are therefore looking for young wingers with 9 Pk and 8+ Sh very cheap.  Like many teams of the lower echelon, only a mutilated handful of our players is of any interest to stronger teams, so make your offers reasonable.

Montreal Juggernaughts
We are looking to move some of our great prospects and other talents. Looking for a winger with a great shot or a good center man. Klesla, Shvidki and others are all tradable.

Oakville Bulls
Anyone to stop the slide!
