Darryl's Five Cents
Toronto - Toronto suffered an abysmal week. Anticipated as a week for them to collect 10 points, it turned into a week of poor performances, and embarrassing losses. They were scheduled to meet, in order, the Oakville Bulls(.380), Mississauga Vipers(.500), Halifax Hawks(.308) {Twice} and the Almont Raiders(.367), with four of the five games in Toronto where the Stallions were unbeaten this season. The Stallions were sitting with a .720 winning percentage they were clearly favoured to win in each game.

So what happened?

- Oakville beat Toronto 5-2, both Toronto goals were scored on the power-play and Toronto did manage to out-shoot the Bulls by 2. Darryl Sydor was booed off the ice repeatedly.
- Mississauga beat Toronto 4-1, Toronto allowed two power-play goals on four chances against. Toronto out-shoots the Vipers by 9. Darryl Sydor was booed off the ice again. Cujo was razzed a few times.
- Halifax beat Toronto 7-6, Toronto was embarrassed at home. Toronto out-shoots Halifax by 13 shots. Darryl Sydor was booed every time he touched the puck. Cujo was booed off the ice.
- Halifax beat Toronto again 3-1, again Toronto's penalty-killing was terrible. Toronto out-shoots Halifax by 5. Darryl Sydor was applauded every time he touched the puck, the Hawks fans apparently loved him. Cujo was benched.
- Toronto finally wins a game against the Raiders 6-3. Toronto out-shoots Almont by 17. Power-play continues to struggle, but the offense finally appears. Sydor continues to be harassed by fans, Cujo was also harassed. Mironov injured for 10 games!

Coach Sittler; "This was an embarrassing week. We tried to pry a defence man from another team without success. With Sydor struggling and the fans getting on his case we tried to move him but the interest wasn't there. I'm hoping the fans will get off his case. Darryl has been playing with a slight injury the past few weeks, but he is getting better, and his play is improving."

Toronto now faces the Mogilny-less Chiefs, the surging Dropkicks, a double against rival Hamilton and rematch with the Hawks. No predictions this week but look for a strong game against Halifax, there is some pride on the line here.

Vikings News and Notes
Edmonton - Radek Dvorak was dealt to the Oakville Bulls earlier this week in return for defence man Scott Stevens.  Dvorak had spent his entire WHL career with the Vikings since being selected 16th overall in the WHL2 entry draft. Dvorak hurt his shoulder during training camp and had yet to find his stride this season, scoring only four times in twenty-two games.  Prior to this season Dvorak had been very consistent for the Vikings recording seasons of 26, 13, 28 and 27 goals in his four years with the team.  Also sent to Oakville was young left-winger Mike Watt who had yet to play a game for the Vikings and in all likelihood, never would have.

Coming back to Edmonton is Scott Stevens who played one year for the Vikings in WHL4 before being traded to Hartford for Brett Hull.  Rookie head coach Rob Ziccarelli is hoping that the return of Stevens will shore up what has been a porous Vikings defense thus far this season.

It was announced today that Vikings prospects Brad Boyes and Steve McCarthy will play for Team Canada at the upcoming World Junior Tournament in Moscow.  McCarthy played for the team last year and has been named the captain of this year's team.

Alexei Yashin continues to lead the Vikings in scoring but his +/- rating of -17 is becoming a league wide joke.

While no one is being actively shopped, the Vikings are never far from trade rumors and it's believed that they are willing to move just about anyone in order to acquire a bona fide #1 goaltender.

MIAMI HERALD (Ticker)
Miami - Doors were slammed and loud shouting could be heard from the OCEANICS dressing room as the Miami team falls into a mid season hole, losing all but 1 of their last 5 contests.

Coach John Ogrodnick put it that way: "The only time the real OCEANICS showed up was against the Express, a game that we nicely played and won. All the others were marked by miserable efforts, losing by a 1 goal margin in all those games. We are trying to battle for the second spot in our division but with this laid back attitude we won't accomplish it. We can't take a single win for granted. Every point counts and if some players think, that winning is a subscription they are wrong and will feel the consequences. I feel this team should make the playoffs and also win at least a game there. I don't wanna make any major changes to this team but people have to get their act together to compete."

There is more to come from the OCEANICS.

Montreal Gazette
Montreal - With a record of 3 wins and 2 losses this week we are somewhat happy. Although many of our star players are slumping at the moment the team still works great in their own end zone. Only 12 goals fell into our own net and that's very acceptable. The problem is that we only managed to score as many. The week began with a 5-3 victory over Krushers and later on the team beat divisional rival Bulls 4-1. Then came the Vikings...back to back games in both towns and 2 dreadful losses, both 1-4. The week ended with a boring 1-0 victory over the Lunatics. A bad performance but a shutout for Ranford and 2 helpful points that keeps the team in the last playoff spot.

Since Ranford is playing far better than anyone expected there are rumors that Turek might be heading elsewhere.

The fans are demanding that young prospect Maxime Ouellet should be given a chance if Ranford weakens.

DOMINATORS MAKE BIGGEST TRADE IN TEAM HISTORY
DES MOINES (AP) - General Manager Jason Kolsrud of the Des Moines Dominators did something Monday night that he said he would never, ever do and that is trade away Joe Thornton. But trade Joe away he did. There had been many a teams and many offers for Joe but were all nixed before they were even received by Kolsrud. Thornton was acquired on a huge draft day deal with the Voodoo. GM Kolsrud asked the Voodoo GM Darren Kinaird what it would take to get the first overall pick. It was mostly talk and both GM's weren't really to serious about making a deal but after only a couple of minutes of chat they agreed on a deal. The Doms sent Mike Modano, Vlad Konstantinov and Bryan McCabe to the Voodoo for the first and twentieth overall picks. They turned out to be Joe (Thornton, of course) and Paul Mara. Neither guy was ever expected to be traded as Kolsrud figured that was the future of the Doms and was something great to build around.

"It never crossed my mind. I told Larry for a couple of weeks that I wasn't gonna trade him no matter what he offered. All of Larry's offers were great and if people would have saw them they probably would have said I was nuts for not taking them but I had a vision of what I was looking for in the team and Joe was the main character. I had felt kind of bad that I wasn't able to put enough good players around Joe for him to show the WHL what he could do. He put up some great numbers for us but could have put up much bigger numbers if we would have had a better supporting cast." said GM Kolsrud.

Joe started big right from the get go. He started off with the Blizzard in the WFHL where he had 25 goals and 54 points in 50 games. Late in the year he was called up to Des Moines where he scored 8 goals and 24 points in 23 games. In his first full season Joe scored 40 goals and 69 points in 74 games as a full time first line player. Last season his stats were just as impressive although the team wasn't. He scored 49 goals and 80 points in 84 games with 32 power play goals. He had 28 points more than the next highest Dominator. He was also a minus 21 but when was playing damn near 30 minutes of hockey every night and him being the only guy to score on a consistent basis that is bound to happen.

Miles of Isles
Victoria - Victoria is still alive and in the playoff hunt. Over the last 7 games the Isles have won 5 and lost 2. In the Campbell Conference where only 5 teams are plus .500 there  are also 5 teams sitting with 25 to 27 points. This is a killer conference.

The key to the resurgence the Isles has been the acquisition of goalie of Guy Hebert. Take a look...
Isles 5 - Krushers 2
Isles 5 - Dominators 3
Isles 6 - Hawks 3
Isles 3 - Steelcats 4 (OT)
Isles 3 - Steelcats 2 (OT)
Isles 3 - Saints 4
Isles 3 - Sparrows 1
That's an average of 4 goals for compared to 3.3 goals against. These stats definitely place the Isles in the upper echelon of the WHL. Now if only the streaks to our key players don't go down.

Oakville News
Oakville - This week saw many moves occur in the Bulls organization. Firstly, Mario Lemieux notified the Bulls that he would be resigning earlier than expected so that he could spend time with his family and prepare for next season. With this announcement the Bulls hired coach Jacques Martin, who promoted Alpo Suhonen to help assist him and the other assistant coach The Rock. Secondly, GM Chris Kubinec made a big trade with the Icedogs that sent centre Steve Yzerman, and fan favourite Ray Whitney to Mississauga. In return the Bulls acquired centres Mike Ricci and Mark Bell, and young gun Patrik Elias. Next the Bulls finally got rid of disgruntled defenseman Scott Stevens. Stevens was traded to the Vikings for Mike Watt, a 3rd round pick, and young gun Radek Dvorak. It is apparent that GM Kubinec is looking towards more of a youth movement with his recent dealings.

It is expected that goaltender Corey Hirsch will be traded soon as well.

KRUSHERS DEFINE MEDIOCRE HOCKEY
Chi-Town (AP) - The KRUSHERS were supposed to be a contender this season. After the big trades, the development of young talent, and the hiring of new coach Joel Quenneville, the Krushers find themselves one game above .500, and struggling to beat the league's crappy teams, like the Islanders, Raiders, and Dominators.

"This is pissing me off," barked Krushers captain Jeremy Roenick, after another hard practice, "I don't want to be a mediocre team, I want to be a good team, and get the damn spotlight back. WHERE IS MY SPOTLIGHT? WHERE ARE MY HO'S?"

"Nobody remembers the losers, or the boring middle-of-the-road teams," said a calm Christer Olsson, "How am I supposed to get laid with the members of Ace of Base if we don't win?"

Is this a repeat of last season, when the Krushers opened up a .500 team and tore the league a new a$$hole down the stretch to get 100 points? We can hope so.

And there is hope.

The new Q-Trap has led the Krushers to have the best defense in the league. With 90 goals against in 30 games, and both goalies Trevor Kidd and Chris Rogles in the top 5 for Goals Against Average, the Krushers have accomplished their goal of being a tough team to score against.

Andrei Kovalenko has 20 goals in 30 games, after many seasons of scoring less than John Lemoine at a frat party, and Dimitri Khristich has racked up an impressive 26 assists and +18 rating through 30 games. Brad Stuart has stopped taking so many stupid penalties, and rookies Richard Zednik and Jan Hrdina have developed into solid 3rd line players.

But let's face it, the Krushers are a one-line team, and that only wins Bingo games, and not hockey games.

Apart from the Killer-5 unit of Roenick (28 pts), Khristich (36 pts), Kovalenko (27 pts), Christer Olsson (19 pts), and Rob Blake (20 pts), the rest of the Krushers can't play to any more than mediocre 3rd-line quality.

Newcomers Adam Oates (19 pts and -4) and Robert Reichel (8 whopping points) shoulder a lot of the blame. Will they take a whole year to produce, like Khristich, or 5 years, like Kovalenko?

And how about The "Next One" Sergei Samsonov? 21 games, 6 goals, 1 assist, and a team worst -7? After a scorching preseason, Sergei has done nothing well except eat popcorn in the press box.

So the big question is, what should be done? Should the Krushers allow Quenneville to keep instilling his defensive-strong system, even though the offense is struggling. Should players be traded before it's too late?

And it's all up to GM Jes Golbez, who has always been cautious, yet willing to pull the trigger on a big deal.

New coach, new players, and more losing. We deserve better than this and we expect wins to be delivered. Although many players and the coach deserve the blunt of the blame for the crappy .500ish record, Golbez has been rather quiet and that has the fans worried. Perhaps it's time for a change.

For the Krushers, this is Paul Varelens.

The spotlight this week will be on Mats Sundin.

NHL Career

The first European-born player to ever captain the Maple Leafs, this durable center was the only Leaf to appear in all 82 regular season games in 1998-99. This five time NHL All-Star plays a very powerful game and has a wide array of shots in his arsenal. Has worn the national colors of Sweden on no less that nine occasions. Has scored 30 or more goals in eight of his 10 NHL seasons. Has averaged over a point-per-game throughout his NHL career.

Mats was drafted first overall in the 1989 Entry Draft by the Québec Nordiques, becoming the first-ever European taken with the top selection. He was traded to Toronto on June 28, 1994. The Leafs sent Wendel Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre, Landon Wilson and Toronto's first-round selection (Jeffrey Kealty) in the 1994 draft to the Nordiques for Mats, Garth Butcher, Todd Warriner and Quebec's first-round pick in the 1994 draft (Nolan Baumgartner). Mats scored his first NHL goal in his first game on October 4, 1990 against Hartford. In 1997-98, the forward reached the 30-goal and 40-assist plateaus for the sixth time in his NHL career. The native of Sweden also scored nine power play goals for the second time, while scoring a short-handed goal for the third-straight season. Mats has played in the 1996, 1997 and 1998 All-Star Games. In the 1998-99 season, Mats once again scored over 30 goals, with 31. He also added 52 assists and led the team in scoring with 83 points. In 1999-2000, Mats recorded his eighth 30 goal, 40 assist season with 32 goals and 41 assists in 73 games. He scored 10 power play markers and seven game-winning goals while registering a +16 rating. Mats recorded his 800th career point in a 5-0 win against Carolina on November 8, 2000.

Mats played his junior hockey in the Swedish Elitserien with Nacka in 1988-89 and as a member of Djurgarden in 1989-90. He scored 18 points in each season.

Mats and Chicago's Chris Chelios are the only two players to be selected to the First All-Star Team at the 1991 Canada Cup and the 1996 World Cup. In 1993-94, as a member of Team Sweden, he was the tournament's leading scorer at the World Championships. Mats played for his country once again, this time at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. He was selected as a Swedish World Team All-Star in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1997.

Mats is the honorary captain of the "Street Buds," the Maple Leafs' ball hockey program for local youth. He also enjoys golfing and is an excellent bandy player.

WHL Career

Mats was a 2nd round draft pick (43rd overall) by the Bridge City Huskies (Mississauga Vipers), WHL Entry Draft.

He was traded to the Fort Saskatchewan Fury (New England Dropkicks) with the Huskies' 11th round draft pick in the WHL Entry Draft for Adam Oates on November 3, 1995.

Not long after he was traded to the Raleigh Wolfpack (Southampton Seagulls) with Mark Tinordi, Patrick Poulin, Sheldon Kennedy and Future Considerations for Phil Housley, Russ Courtnall, Andrei Nikolishin and Valeri Karpov on January 25, 1996.

A day later Mats was traded to the Milton Mustangs (Toronto Stallions) with Janne Laukkanen and Kevin Wortman for Joe Nieuwendyk, Kevin Haller and Philippe Boucher on January 26, 1996.

In what can only be described as Toronto's worst deal ever, Mats was traded to the Newfoundland Gangstaz (Quebec City Corinthians) with Jason Allison, Drake Berehowsky and the Mustangs' 2nd and 3rd round draft picks in the WHL2 Entry Draft for Mark Messier, Tyler Wright, Craig Wolanin and the Gangstaz's 4th and 5th round draft picks in the WHL2 Entry Draft on March 31, 1996.
