Toronto Notes

Toronto - The Stallions have quietly climbed into first place in the conference and sit six points back of the President's Trophy candidates the Vancouver Voodoo. Albeit a tenuous two point hold on first in the Wales over the Quebec City Corinthians. New comer Miro Satan has fit in well scoring five points in the last five games. All the big guns for Toronto have been contributing and Curtis is playing himself out of his slump. Toronto managed three wins a tie and a loss last week and continue their 9 game road trip in the coming week. They travel to Montreal, Chicoutimi, New England, Pittsburgh and Edmonton this week. Coach Sittler is hoping this extended road trip will help bring the team together a little better;

"Road trips tend to give guys some time to spend together and build those bonds that will help them work together a little better. Nine games over two weeks on the road will help all the new faces to this team get acquainted better. When you are at home everyone tends to leave the rink and go their separate ways, on the road they all go the same way...the hotel. The past four games have already shown some better cohesion and I feel we will be a stronger team after this trip."

It has been rumoured that Toronto is actively seeking some defensive help. Rumours have come from many corners of the league that GM Howe and Assistant GM Sittler have been inquiring about defenceman. Asked if they were close to making a deal, Sittler says:

"No. We have been looking around, but there are few quality defenceman around and we are not really looking to rent players. We want someone we can count on for a couple of years. It is known that Sydor wanted out, but his play has improved over the last two weeks and we are not so intent on moving him. I am more interested in bringing in someone who will help our struggling powerplay. Whether the right deal is out there or not, we'll just have to wait and see."

Whatever happens, the powerplay is at a five year low. Not since 1995-1996(Season 1) has Toronto's powerplay been so pathetic. Currently sitting at 17.5% effective and 16.8% at home, changes are definitely needed.

Random Kicks
New England -  Bure, Derian Hatcher, Hal Gill, Igor Korolev, and Arturs Irbe all made their debuts last week. Dimitri Yushkevich, Ray Whitney and Scott Mellanby will all play next game vs the dead last place Lunatics.... The uniform lady, Gia Grimaldi, is thinking about going on strike for all the extra work she's done sewing letters and numbers on for new players... With Theo Fleury's departure, Kyle McLaren and Derian Hatcher have been named alternate captains behind captain Doug Weight and first alternate Teemu Selanne.

No jabs at the Federal Liberals this week. Go Klein Go.

Bulls Report

OAKVILLE(AP) - This week saw the Bulls make a few line-up changes, most notably the acquisition of right winger Valeri Bure. Valeri Bure helped the Bulls win a few games this week as he was acquired in a deal that sent away Daniel Alfredsson. Both played their first game against each other early last week when the Corinthians came into Oakville for a heated game. The Bulls with their hometown crowd behind them beat Alfredsson and the Corinths 5-2 in what was a huge win for the team.

Recent rumors is that the Bulls have two more deals close to completion that may send away offensive minded youngster Remi Royer in a deal that could add a little more veteran leadership to the club for the play-off run. Also of note is that Mike Watt and Corey Hirsch are asking for more playing time, but are not getting it anytime soon, so they may be on their way out in a deal that could bring in an offensive-minded winger.

All-Star Report
by Al Strachen

"The worst All-Star weekend in the WHL's six year history". That was the most common tag line in every newspaper. With accusations of nepotism from the west, and butt-kissing in the east and the surprise disappearance of one coach.

The eastern GM, trying not to mimic his western counterpart, took players evenly from each team in his conference. Well almost, he managed to take an average two or three guys from each team but still managed to take five players from the Commissioners team. However his efforts were appreciated by eastern GM's who all concurred that his selection was well thought out, and evenly distributed.

This was very much unlike the west, where fully half the roster was selected from the conference GM's team and the other powerhouse(?) Rocky Mountain. The feud between western GM's got so bitter that one GM refused to allow his player to compete in the game. Rightly or wrongly (this reporter declines to make a decision on the issue) Blake was withheld from the All-Star weekend. When asked about his boss's order that he refrain from participating he said:

"I fully agree with Jes. This was a farce, and I think everyone involved with the weekend felt the same way. I spoke to Eric Lindros and he felt it was a wasted effort on everyone's part. He wished his GM had held him out too."

We caught up with the Big "E" and asked him:

"Are you kidding? Our GM didn't even show up to coach! Gilbert Perreault stepped in at Commissioner Hebert's request to help out. Then we face a team made up of Voodooo and Express players. It was like All-Star games from the past where the Stanley Cup winner played the best from the league. I felt for Robbie (Blake) though, he's a great player and this is supposed to be the time to show off. But I think (GM Jes) Golbez made the right choice, as far as that goes. There should be some changes made the (All-Star) weekend or it will die out. I mean, it should be scraped next year due to the Olympics anyway, but if it is like this one, it will die out anyway."

Suggestions were made by one GM, but nothing was followed up on. It appears as though the league is not interested in making changes to improve the "big show". But something will have to be done.

2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City Utah...does anyone care?!?
by Brian Howe

Um...newsflash to the Web Hockey League: "The Olympics are Coming!" and you had better start making plans to join in or plan on being spectators. Ok they are still a year away, but let's start making plans.

For example;
1) who's going to GM the Canadian team?
2) who's going to coach the Canadian team?
3) who's playing for the Canadian team?
4) oh yeah, and what about the other countries?

Canada had better start appointing someone or someoneS to start picking a team. I believe that Canada should have:

1) two co-GM's (who will have to jointly put a team together),
2) a head coach (even strength lines and player selection), and
3) an assistant coach (special teams).

I believe that nominations should start now for GM's and coaches. There should be no two people (fantasy or real) from any one team.

I will initiate this process by appointing myself as the Canadian Olympic Co-ordinator until the positions are filled. Then it will be turned over to them to handle.

One rule: YOU CANNOT NOMINATE YOURSELF, you can nominate a fantasy coach on your team, but not yourself.
(Someone else will have to nominate you)

Make all nominations to me at:   mailto:olympics@platinumcomputing.com.

I will then send out ballots to each Canadian GM to vote with.

For the American Team there are three yankee GM's so I will create a ballot with GM/Coach for you guys to vote for.
For the Swedish Team there are three Swedish GM's so I will do the same for them as for the Americans.

After all three nations above are selected, I will announce the openings for the other international teams. Nominations will be accepted and you will be able to nominate yourself for those positions.

Come on guys, let's make the Olympics better than the All-Star fiasco. Last time around they were pretty entertaining and they can be again.
